Caste
The Hindu castes are two fold in India today. There are the vans, as spoken of in the Vedas, and the jatos which aren't mentioned in sacred texts.
There are four vans, which originally were not fixed, but flexible and based upon a persons motivation and occupation. There are many sacred texts that tell stories in which the characters change vans or where the father may be of one Vanna, the mother of another Vanna, and they have a child that is of yet another Vanna.
Varnas
-those motivated by power
-those motivated by wealth
-those motivated by knowledge
-those who are content to just get through life
The jatos were social groups that have since been casted. They are not directly mentioned in sacred texts as a caste, but the social groups are mentioned and once again as 'flexible' groups. The jatos have not only come to incorporate social groups, but also ethnic groups as well. The largest portion of the caste system is the jatis. Jatis are a subdivision of the varnas.
Not all Hindu sects, subsects, etc recognize the caste system. Some outright reject it in its current state and condition.
I'm a member of the Progressive Hindu Association and would actually very much like the varnas to be fixed.
