Default Why do you have to be born Hindu to be a Hindu?

Hinduism makes sense to me, but I heard that one cannot convert, why?

You can convert. There are many Western Hindus and Western Yogis living in Ashrams in India. You can even do the same in the West. Study the Gita and the Upanishads, build your own little temple for your prayers and chanting and go for it. Krishna is as much available to you as He is to any Brahmin.

You can do anything you put your mind to (at least in the faith department)

Convert all you want no one will stop you.

If talking about the religion, you don't have to be born Hindu. It is said that one cannot convert because you are either Hindu or you are not. If you consider yourself to be Hindu in your heart, then you are Hindu.

No one is born into any religion. You need to research the religion yourself, verify all evidence using your faculty of rationality and perception, and have the full conviction in your heart in order to be a true Believer of any religion.

And do not follow (blindly) any information of which you have no (direct) knowledge. (Using your faculties of perception and conception, you must verify it for yourself. (In the Court of your Lord,) you will be held accountable for your hearing, sight, and the faculty of reasoning."[Qur'an: 17:36]
