He is none other than Lord Maha Vishnu.

In the Bhagavad-Gita (4.8), Lord Krishna gives the reasons He descends to this world: "To deliver the pious and to annihilate the miscreants, as well as to re-establish the principles of religion, I Myself appear, millennium after millennium."

Good question. The following is my answer.

my answer:

Hinduism is an ancient religion created by maharishis, the great gurus, and great acharyas like Adhi sankara, Ramanujacharya, madhvacharya and others to show a way of life. This religion is containing rich cultures, traditions created for the people.

The main upadesa is to live in righteous way of living or following dharma. of course there are many conflicts over the religion, but now all are united and standing one umbrella. The shaivats are following their rituals and vaishanavas are doing in their way. But, all are hindus. Hinduism is based on vedas, Upanishads, agamas, Upanishads, puranas, and ithihasas.

There are many deities in Hinduism. At the top are the Trimurti: Shiva (the destroyer), Vishnu (the protector), and Brahma (the creator), and their wives (goddesses in their own right): Shakti (also known as Paarvathi, Ambika) the goddess of courage and power, Lakshmi the goddess of all forms of wealth, and Saraswati the goddess of learning. The children of the Trimurti are also devas, such as Ganesha and Skanda or Kartikaya.

Several gods are believed to have had incarnations (avatars). As the protector of life, one of the duties of Vishnu is to appear on the earth whenever a firm hand is required to set things right. The epic Bhagavatha Purana is the chronology of Vishnu's ten major incarnations (there are in total twenty six incarnations): Matsya (fish), Kurma (turtle), Varaha (boar), Narasimha (lion-faced human), Vamana (an ascetic in the form of a midget), Parasurama (a militant Brahmin), Rama, Krishna, Gautam Buddha(later buddhists separated themselves from Hindus), Kalki (a predicted warrior on a white horse who would come in this yuga ) whose appearance also signals the beginning of the end of the epoch.

Mahavishnu's Krishna Avatar to establish dharma and Rama Avatar to show dharma. This is all to protect the people and to show a right direction.

a good question

though i am not much competetent , i try my best to answer

pl remember the sloka from bhagavatgita

"parithranaya saadhoonaam vinashayacha dusctrutham
dharma samsathapanarthaya sambhavami yuge yuge"

For the upliftment of the good and virtuous,
For the destruction of evil,
For the re-establishment of the natural law,
i will come in every age

These golden words were spoken by lord Krishna to Partha, at the dawn of the first day of the Great Mahabharata War at Kuruksetra, when he is all disillusioned and has to make a choice between doing the right and fighting his brothers.

Fast-forward to present day and you can easily draw a metaphor to the above mentioned Partha and to the millions that make up this great country. India is Rising, no doubt and is on-road to become one of the greatest economic and technological superpowers of the world. But I often feel that India is like a chained Phoenix.

"Yada yada hi dharmasya glanir bhavati Bharata; Abhyutthanam adharmasya tadatmanam srijamyaham. Paritranaya sadhunam vinasaya cha dushkritam; Dharma-samthapanarthaya sambhavami yuge yuge."

which means...

"Whenever the balance of the universe is disturbed by external interference from any of its parts, then I reveal Myself as the Power of eternal balancing. For the protection of those who are in harmony, and the rectification of everything disharmonious, I incarnate Myself at every juncture of time."

The ten incarnations or ?Dasa Avatara? of Lord Vishnu is an extraordinary recording of the evolution of human life and advance in human civilization. In Hindu religion, the three main deities are Lord Brahma, Vishu and Shiva. Brahma creates, Vishnu protects and Shiva destroys - three faces of Mother Nature. Lord Vishnu descends on Earth to uphold dharma and to cleanse the Earth of evil. So far, Lord Vishnu has appeared nine times on Earth and the tenth, kalki, is expected.
