Default Hinduism...What exactly is the 3rd Eye of Shiva?

What is the spiritual significance of the 3rd eye of Shiva? Is it an artists visualization of a writers imagination? Or does it have to do with anything spiritual in Yoga and meditation?

The third eye is located in the forehead and is used to foresee or predict this is also true in not just Hindu beliefs but many others.

Shiva formed the third eye to restore order and fire emerged from his third eye to re-create light. The fierce light from his third eye is so powerful and destructive that henceforth he only opens it to destroy all that is unconscious, dark, and dualistic, in this dancing universe. Shiva?s third eye opens to end all illusion. In Hinduism and Buddhism, the third eye is a symbol of enlightenment.
I cant say that I have ever heard of the 3rd eye having anything to do with yoga I'm afraid.
I hope this has helped anyway.

It has a lot of basis in Yoga and meditation.Meditation involves activation of Chakras from the lowermost to the top most. The lowermost Chakra is the spot where Kudalini is stored and it gets activated when it reaches the top most Chakra - The Sahasrara Chakra. This is where enlightenment is attained or the spiritual eye is awakened. So this is known as third eye of Shiva

Imagine an Ellipsoid and a circle.A circle represents a perfect Universe. It has one common center. An ellipsoid represents, imperfect universe and it has two focal point. There two focal points act as poles and form polarities. So The bottommost and top most are two focal points represented by Shiva and Shakthi. So this third eye is formed when Shakthi and Shiva unite ,the ellipsoid is reduced to a sphere!!!!!.....Perfection is attained!!!

The spiritual eye is the gateway to the states of divine consciousness
In deep meditation the devotee 's consciousness penetrates the 3rd eye

The single eye of intuition is between the eyebrows
It is a golden blue star

Lord Siva is not an ordinary living entity, nor is he in the category of Visnu, or the Supreme Personality of Godhead. He is far more powerful than any living entity up to the standard of Brahma, yet he is not on an equal level with Visnu. Since he is almost like Lord Visnu, Siva can see past, present and future. One of his eyes is like the sun, another is like the moon, and his third eye, which is between his eyebrows, is like fire. He can generate fire from his middle eye, and he is able to vanquish any powerful living entity, including Brahma, yet he does not live pompously in a nice house, etc., nor does he possess any material properties, although he is master of the material world. He lives mostly in the crematorium, where dead bodies are burnt, and the whirlwind dust of the crematorium is his bodily dress. He is unstained by material contamination.

We know of Lord Siva burning the cupid by his third eye.

Metaphorically speaking, I think the 3rd Eye of Shiva means our instinct or our gut feeling about something or the sixth sense as we call it
If in doubt about anything, a spiritually realized person whose intelligence is purified by the study of scriptures, gets his/her inspiration from within (God seated within his heart), through his feelings or six sense about the decision on the action he should or should not perform, is the right decision
That is what I feel. I may be wrong.
