It is not longer being used, however the people in India still use it and accept their place in life and where the fall on the Caste. They feel it is do to actions in a previous life.
I have been there and it is really interesting to see how the people are.
The Caste System dates back to the time of the Aryans and is hard to break.
The caste system is formed with a purpose in medic periods of ancient times.It is meant to specialize the communities to do a particular job so that they can be expertise in that.
But what developed later on is completely got different,which is still existing.... honestly there is no need for these caste system better improve the education system so that it can erase the poverty and brings prosperity to the people....
It was an ancient system where the caste was determined by your deeds. It later on degenerated into a determination by birth and further into caste based discrimination. This is all history.
In modern India one cannot discriminate based on caste and it is a punishable of fence. There are legal and constitutional protection for the lower castes.
The basic definition has not been restored even today which still is based on caste determination by heredity whereas it should be by deeds according to the ancient system.
Many political parties indulge in caste/religion based politics.
Caste system existed in other countries and religions as well.
Ancient Vedic society used the caste system to differentiate between classes of people similar to the way all other societies in ancient times have classifications of individuals by heritage, wealth and occupation. What unfortunately has occurred is using the caste system that once maintained order in ancient India as a prejudicial tool to oppress those who are of lower castes.
I for one think the caste system is absolutely useless now because with India using modern law such a system becomes archaic and should be abolished.
Any system that oppresses other should be abolished IMO.
