Default hinduism :what is the meaning of the following verses ?

thanks Sri Vidya sir ...the reason why I asked is because in the verse in sanskrit there is no mention of hare krishna mahamantra at all ...kertanad eva krishnasya this means to chant the names of Krishna ! there are 1000 names of him in sahasranaamam ...hence I asked this question ..I want to know why they assumed that chanting krishna's names implies hare krishna mahamantra !

please also tell me where in any of the 18 mahapuranas and the 4 vedas this Hare krishna mahamantra os stated ...

1) Srimad Bhagavatam 12.3.51:

'Kale doss node Raeann

My dear King, although Kali yuga is an ocean of faults, there is still one good quality about this age: Simply by chanting the Hare Krishna Maha Mantra, one can become free from material bondage and be promoted to the transcendental kingdom.

Purport by Sri Sri A. C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada:

After mentioning the innumerable faults of this age of Kali, Sukadeva Gosvami now mentions its one brilliant aspect. Just as one powerful king can kill innumerable thieves, one brilliant spiritual quality can destroy all the contamination of this age. It is impossible to overestimate the importance of chanting Hare Krishna, Hare Krishna, Krishna, Krishna, Hare Hare / Hare Rama, Hare Rama, Rama Rama, Hare Hare, especially in this fallen age.

2) Srimad Bhagavatam 12.3.52:

'krte yad dhyayato visnum
tretayam yajato makhaih
dvapare paricaryayam
kalau tad dhari kirtanat'

Whatever result was obtained in Satyayuga by meditating on Visnu, in Treta yuga by performing sacrifices, and in Dvaparayuga by serving the Lord's lotus feet can be obtained in Kaliyuga simply by chanting the Hare Krishna Maha Mantra.

Purport by Sri Sri A. C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada:

A similar verse is found in the Vishnu Purana (6.2.17), and also in the Padma Purana (Uttara khanda 72.25) and the Brhan Naradiya Purana (38.97):

'dhyayan krte yajan yajnais
tretayam dvapare 'rcayan
yad apnoti tad apnoti
kalau sankirtya kesavam'

"Whatever is achieved by meditation in Satyayuga, by the performance of sacrifice in Tretayuga, and by the worship of Lord Krishna's lotus feet in Dvaparayuga is obtained in the age of Kali simply by glorifying the name of Lord Kesava."

Srila Jiva Gosvami has further quoted from the Brahma-vaivarta Pura?a concerning the degraded condition of people in Kaliyuga:

'atah kalau tapo yoga
vidya yajnadikah kriyah
sanga bhavanti na krtah
kusalair api dehibhih'

"Thus in the age of Kali the practices of austerity, yoga meditation, Deity worship, sacrifice and so on, along with their various subsidiary functions, are not properly carried out, even by the most expert embodied souls.

Srila Jiva Gosvami has also cited the Caturmasya mahatmya of the Skanda Purana concerning the necessity of chanting Hare Krishna in this age:

'tatha caivottamam loke
tapah sri hari kirtanam
kalau yuge visesena
visnu prityai samacaret'

'In this way the most perfect penance to be executed in this world is the chanting of the name of Lord Sri Hari. Especially in the age of Kali, one can satisfy the Supreme Lord Vishnu by performing sankirtana.''

In conclusion, massive propaganda should be made all over the world to induce people to chant the Hare Krishna Mantra, by which human society can be rescued from the dangerous ocean of the age of Kali.

Only Nama Sangirtana or Kirtana or nama japa on Lord Krishna is emphasized in Srimad Bhagavatam. One can choose any name of lord Krishna.

kirtanat ? by chanting; eva ? certainly; krsnasya ? of the holy name of Krishna; (SB 12.3.52 )

hari kirtanat ? simply by chanting the Krishna's name (SB 12.3.53).

Sri Sri A. C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada simplified and gave us the Maha Mantra as a true Guru.

Radharani's name is not in the Srimad Bhagavatam. It is in later texts such as the Gita Govinda (by Jayadeva) where we find the story of Radha given in more detail.

In the Brihad-Gautamiya Tantra, Radharani is described as follows:"The transcendental goddess Srimati Radharani is the direct counterpart of Lord Sri Krishna. She is the central figure for all the goddesses of fortune. She possesses all the attractiveness to attract the all-attractive Personality of Godhead. She is the primeval internal potency of the Lord."

The Padma Purana describes 18,000 cowherd-girls (gopis) among whom it says 108 are the most important. Among those 108, eight are considered more important still, and among the eight, two have a special position - Chandravali and Radharani. Of the two, Radha is considered the foremost. Others are: Lalita, Vishakha, Padma, Bhadra, Saibya and Syama.

One of Radharani's names, HARA (mentioned in Narada-pancaratra 5.5.59), in vocative Hare, forms a part of the Hare Krishna 'Maha-Mantra', one of the most popular Vedic mantras (Verse 1, Kali Santarana Upanishad), especially amongst Gaudiya Vaishnavas. Radharani's names hold a place of prime importance within Gaudiya Vaishnava religious practices.

"Hare" can be interpreted as either the vocative of Hari, another name of Vishnu meaning "he who removes illusion" (in 'Hare Rama Hare Rama; Rama Rama Hare Hare'), or as the vocative of Hara, a name of Radha (in 'Hare Krishna Hare Krishna; Krishna Krishna Hare Hare').

You may note that the author of Bhagavatam does not see any difference between Vishnu, Krishna and Hari.

The Mahamantra appears in Kali-Santarana Upanishad of Krishna Yajur Veda with the words 'Hare Rama' preceding 'Hare Krishna'. The order of words were altered by Chaitanya Mahaprabhu so that even the lower caste people could chant it. His argument was that since an Upanishad Mantra is altered in order, it is no longer the right of upper castes and can be chanted by everyone.

Hare Krishna Mahamantra does not appear in any of the 4 Vedas. Most of the important Vedamantras begin with 'Aum'. It may be in some of the Puranas of later dates, though i am not sure about it. Like you mentioned, it is just an assumption that chanting Krishna's name means chanting Hare Krishna mantra. One can chant any name of Krishna, Vishnu or Hari from the Vishnu Sahasranamam.

You may play around with my username but its a poor joke. I hope you understand the difference between an Upanishad and a Veda and why the Vedas are given the highest status among scriptures. If no, please ask such a question and i will modestly answer to that. It is clear that the mantra does not appear in any of the 4 Vedas. If so, please quote and clear my ignorance. Also, the questioner had asked if the mantra appears in any of the 4 Vedas. My answer is also response to that. So to sum it up. Hare Krishna Mahamantra does not appear in any of the 4 Vedas. It appears in Kali Santarana Upanishad which is associated with Krishna Yajurveda, but is not a Veda or a primary Upanishad. Try to understand what a member means to say before getting into criticism and branding. What you dont understand is that you are belittling yourself with a public announcement of your ignorance.

In his 18 Purana's Vyasa said only 2 things...."Paropakarame pun yam" and "Papame para pedant". So we need not take headache to know more about the Purana's.

I like the answer, especially the above comment, by C. Sri Vidya Rajagopalan.

The Hare Krishna Mahamantra appears in the Vedas, especially in the Kalisantarana Upanishad belonging to the Krishna-Yajur-Veda.

Anyway I copy and paste below what was answered in a previous question regarding the same topic.
Regarding S.B.12.3.51 and hare krishna mahamantra:

It should be noted that, if a rule says smoking cigarette is not allowed, automatically smoking beedi or any or harmful intoxicant is also not allowed. One cannot argue that the rule says only cigarette but no beedi is mentioned and therefore, I can smoke beedi. Such an argument is only a misunderstanding of the spirit of the rule.

Similarly, when the Hare Krishna Mahamantra is mentioned in the translation, it is taking in to the spirit of the verse. Srila Prabhupada, following in the footsteps of ?r? Caitanya Mah?prabhu and the previous ?c?ryas has given the Hare Krishna Mahamantra for the benefit of the entire mankind so that they can be sure that they have to chant the Hare Krishna Mahamantra as daily s?dhana and be delivered from the material existence.

The verse states, "k?rtan?d eva k???asya", which is explained in the kali-santarana upanisad Upani?ad, wherin Brahm? taught N?rada the Hare K???a mah?-mantra (k?rtan?d eva k???asya) for n??anam? of kali-kalmas?a (kaler do?a-nidhe).

The Kali-Sant?ra?a Upani?ad (?????????) is a Vaishnava Vedantic text associated with the Krishna Yajurveda. It is the source of the "Hare Krishna" mantra, claiming that "These sixteen words are destructive of the evil effects of Kali Yuga." In the Muktik? canon of 108 Upanishads, it is counted as number 103.

The Upanishad asserts that whoever recites the mantra 35 million (sardha trikotir) times will be absolved from the sin of the murder of a Brahmin, the theft of gold, sexual intercourse with a woman of a lower caste, or even generally from any sin altogether. With a daily quota of 16 rosaries with 108 beads (1.5 hours of chanting), this count would be reached in 55.5 years.

The Upanishad at least predates the 16th century when the mantra was popularized by Chaitanya Mahaprabhu, and is believed to be of ancient origin by his followers (Gaudiya Vaishnavism)

Please read below the exact appearance of the Hare Krishna Mahamantra.

In the Kali-santarana Upanishad (1-11)
hari om. dvaparante narada brahmanam
jagama katham bhagavan gam
paryatana kalim santareyam iti. [1]

"Hari Om! After travelling all over the world, Shrila Narada Muni approached Lord Brahma (his own father and guru) during the time when Dvapara-yuga was about to end. He asked him, ?O Lord! How will all the living entities be able to deliver themselves from the most degraded age of Kali which is about to begin.?

sa hovaca. brahma sadhu prishto?smi
sarva shruti rahasyam gopyam tac
chrinu yena kali samsaram tarishyasi.[2]

Lord Brahma replied, ?You have asked the most important and relevant question for the benefit of humanity. I will tell you now the most concealed secret of the Vedic literatures, with the help of which everyone can easily cross this most dangerous age of Kali.

?Simply by chanting the transcendental names of the original enjoyer and the Supreme Personality of Godhead, Lord Narayana, all the sins will be cleansed in Kali-yuga.?

Narada Muni again asked,?Which are those specific names of the Lord which are most effective in Kali-yuga??

natah parataropayah, sarva-vedeshu drishyate. [6]

Lord Brahma replied, ?The sixteen words-Hare Krishna, Hare Krishna, Krishna
Krishna, Hare Hare; Hare Rama, Hare Rama, Rama Rama, Hare Hare-are especially meant for completely destroying all the contamination of Kali. To save oneself from the contamination of Kali-yuga, there is no alternative in all theVedas except the chanting of this sixteen-word mantra.

One needs an Accra to understand the slog not by just Sanskrit grammatical understanding.
Otherwise Carvaka would have been in a better position to understand Bhagavatam. Carvaka said Rina Karita tram pi bet, Bahama bhutasya dehasya punar agamanam kuto bhavet.

Sri Vidya Rajagopalan and Nitai Gaura gave wonderful explanation. There is nothing further to be said.

One has to faithfully follow his particular archery prepareRand if they it is hare krishna mahamantra accept it and if they say it is vishnusahasranamam accept it. That's all.

Let me produce below what I wrote in response to Jay Shri Krishna and Nitai Gaura's back and forth arguments.

I think both of you are saying the same thing back and forth.

Why don't you agree with saying that Vishnu Sahasranamam chanting and Hare Krishna chanting is one and the same?.

That will settle the issue.

Moreover, I presume that since Nitai Gaura is representing His Parampara Acharyas {Brahma Madhava Gaudiya sampradaya}, his gurus like Swami A.C. Bhaktivedanta and others will read it as hare krishna mahamantra and Jay Shri Krishna who come in the Ramanuja Sri Sampradayam will read it as Vishnu Sahasranamam. There is no conflict in that. I think both of you will agree with me without further argument back and forth churning the same thing again and again. No doubt, it is related to Krishna and Vishnu and great, but it should settle amiably without having ill feelings for each other.

I am a neutral person and just stating my feelings.

It is interesting to note that various persons in the wrestling assembly saw Krishna differently as is seen in the Bhagvatam which I produce below for both of you.

The various groups of people in the arena regarded Krihsna in different ways when He entered it with His elder brother.
1} The wrestlers saw Krihsna as a lightning bolt,
2} the men of Mathura as the best of males,
3} the women as Cupid in person,
4} the cowherd men as their relative,
5} the impious rulers as a chastiser,
6} His parents as their child,
7} the King of the Bhojas as death,
8} the unintelligent as the Supreme Lord's universal form,
9} the yogis as the Absolute Truth and
10 } the Vrisnis as their supreme worshipable Deity.

All the above persons saw ONE KRISHNA DIFFERENTLY according to their vision just as both of you are seeing the verse kaler dosa . . .

The problem will arise if they say it is ONLY hare Krishna but not Visnhnusahasranama. I guess, that's not the case here. In the same way, if someone who chants Vishnusahasranama says the verse refers not to Hare Krishna Maharashtra, then the problem arises. I personally see no difference between the two ways of seeing the verse and chanting the two mantras.

The reason is just after stating that the said mantra appears in the KassandraRananisad of Krishna YAJUR VEDA, sates that the said mantra does not appear in any of the VEDAS (which incluses Krishna YAJUR VEDA). On the other hand, here are the references for Hare Krihna mahamantra in the Vedas. Vedas are srutis and upanisads being part of the Vedas, i.e., srutis mention the mahamantra. Bhagavatam being a purana and smriti doesn't explicitly express it. The verse is implying the maha-mantra.

(1) The Pippalada branch of the Atharva Veda states:
svannma-mula-mantrena
sarvam hladayati vibhuhu
sa eve mulam-mantram japati
haririti krishna iti rama iti
"The name of God is the root of all mantras, a splendid thing that
brings joy to all. This root mantra is chanted with the words hari,
krishna, and rama."

(2) The Kali-santarana Upanishad, part of the Yajur Veda, states:
hare krishna hare krishna
krishna krishna hare hare
hare rama hare rama
rama rama hare hare

iti shodashakam namnam
kali-kalmasha-nashanam
natah parataropayah
sarva-vedeshu drishyate

"The sixteen names of the Hare Krishna maha-mantra?Hare Krishna, Hare
Krishna, Krishna Krishna, Hare Hare/ Hare Rama, Hare Rama, Rama Rama,
Hare Hare?destroy the iniquities of the Kali age. This is the ultimate
conclusion of all the Vedas."

The context of the above quote is important: This Upanishadic text is
a dialogue between Brahma, the first created being, and Narada, his
disciple, who asks him about the most effective means to attain
liberation in the current age. Brahma answers with the above verse.
And in a prior verse he informs Narada that the maha-mantra is "the
real secret of the Vedic literature," thus underlining the mantra's
confidential nature and its importance for the Vaishnava tradition.

(3) The Rama-tapani Upanishad (1.6) explains each of the names of the
maha-mantra in the following way:
harati tri-vidham tapam
janma-koti-shatodbhavam
papam ca smaratam yasmat
tasmad dharir iti smritaha

"The Lord is known as Hari because he takes away the sins?as well as
the three types of suffering that result from them?of those who
remember him. These are sins that are accumulated over millions of
births."

krishir bhur-vacakah shabdo
nash ca nirvriti-shucakaha
tayor aikyam param brahma
krishna ity abhidhiyate

"The root krish indicates supreme attractiveness; the suffix na points
to ultimate joy. Thus, the name Krishna indicates the Supreme Brahman
[spirit], who is the culmination of both attractiveness and joy."

ramante yogino 'nante
satyanande chid-atmani
iti rama-padenasau
param brahmabhidhiyate

"Yogis, or those desiring to link with God, take pleasure in the
Supreme Self who manifests as an absolute form of eternity, knowledge,
and bliss. That same truth, known as the Parabrahman, is also called
Rama."

Br?had-vis?n?u-sahasran?ma-stotra in the Uttara-khan?d?a of the Padma Pur?n?a (72.335) asserts:

"[Lord ?iva addressed his wife, Durg?:] 'O Var?nan?, 'I chant the holy name of R?ma, R?ma, R?ma and thus enjoy this beautiful sound. This holy name of R?macandra is equal to one thousand holy names of Lord Vis?n?u.'


Further Laghu-bh?gavat?mr?ta (1.5.354) concludes:

"'The pious results derived from chanting the thousand holy names of Vis?n?u three times can be attained by only one utterance of the holy name of Kr?s?n?a.'


The above two quotes should settle the differences conclusively.

Sri Vidya Gopalan Sir has given a good reply, but there is one correction in his reply.

The purport to these verses are not by A.C.Bhaktivedanta Swami prepaid.DArabhupada wrote purports till the brahma vimohana lila in the tenth canto.

The chapters after this and the eleventh canto and twelfth canto's purports are by the disciples of Prabhupada.
