What does the Hindu word "kanya" really mean? Is it same as the English word "virgin"

If a young girl or a young woman plays with herself or plays with a lesbian partner and has penetration with an object other than penis, is she still considered virgin?

Kanya usually means a "unmarried girl".Virgin is more a state of mind than the physical state-the presence of hymen (which is considered prove of virginity) can be affected due to a range of physical activities,like biking,horse-riding etc.,which can cause it to tear away,even without any sexual act.

yes u r right. in India normally the girls do not lose their virginity till they r married. so, Kanya means a girl who is not yet married ( i.e. who has not yet lost her virginity ) i can't answer your second part of the question as in India we still consider sex as a very private matter. even if a girl indulges in the above said things she will not disclose with anybody. so, i don't know the answer for your second part of the question.
