the two major sects Sunni and Shina were created because Sunnis believe the first caliph should be Abeu bark while shies believe the first caliph should be Ali. and then it continues because Sunnis follow Omar and usman while shias follow the decendants of ali.

this then results in many other types of sects such as different types of sunnis(hanafy maliki) and different types of shias.

It was during the 600s, not long after prophet Muhammad's death (peace be upon him)
, when Muslims split into two main divisions: Sunni and Shiah.

Sunnite Muslims, who account for most of the Islamic world today, believe that Islamic leadership passes to caliphs (temporal and spiritual leaders) who are selected from the prophet Muhammad's tribe. (peace be upon him)

The Shiites believe, however, that the true leaders of Islam descend from Ali (c. 600-661), prophet Muhammad's cousin and the husband of Muhammad's daughter, Fatimah (r.a) . Ali (r.a), who was the fourth caliph (656-61), is revered by Shiites as the rightful successor to the prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) and are led by his descendants.

Shiites form the largest subgroup, but there are other sects within Islam as well: the Wahhabi Muslims are a puritanical sect; the Baha'is emerged from the Shiites; and the Ismaili Khoja Muslims have been in existence almost from the beginning of Islam. While Islamic practices may vary somewhat among the sects, all Islamic people uphold the Five Pillars of Faith.

Muaweeya was against Mola Ali(as). He made a political party called Ahle-Sunnah because after the Darth of Umar Khilafat was offered to Mola Ali (as) with the condition that successor has to follow the sun nah of predecessors. Mola Ali (as) rejected that. Muaweeya exploited that to rally people against Mola Ali (as). After the battle with Mola Ali(as) Muaweeya made a fraud agreement with Mola Ali (as) and added the words Wa Jamait to show unity among Muslims.
Later rulers adopted it as Religio-Political party for political reasons because it gave them shelter of religion to do anything.
