Why do women have to cover their head in Islam and men don't?
It seems to me as if only women have to cover almost everything. While men don't have to cover much. Honestly a guy's hair is just as attractive as a women's so why don't they have to cover it? And the face and hands are also just as attractive.

Marriage in Islam

Yes, what Kevin said. (Orthodox Jewish women are ALSO supposed to cover their hair for more or less the same reason.) As far as covering everything else, men and women are SUPPOSED to both dress modestly (and that can vary between regions and time); why men often don't and women often do is has a lot to do with patriarchal society on Earth...
Of the main religions, Islam treats women the worst. If you take the Koran literally, women are indeed property and seen inferior to men in the eyes of law.
In fact, in Islam the women is blamed for the temptations of men, that is why they must cover their head.
One of the most shameful customs in Islam is, when a women is raped it is allowed in many Islamic countries for the husband to kill their wives for adultery and shame. In countries like Iran for example, if a women is raped she can be imprisoned.
Covering head and hair is not mentioned in any verse in Quran Yet most Muslims persuade women to do it because it's an old Arab Tradition.

My sister always complained on why she should always cover up her hair.
It always caused her to question Islamic faith.
But you know, there is no convincing answer to that.

The head covering, gets really annoying in the hot summer days
Muslim women have to cover their head (as well as the rest of their bodies, only exposing the face and hands) because Almighty GOD (glorious and exalted is HE) has "commanded" the Muslim woman to do so!! Regarding Muslim men... they also are commanded to dress modestly. They are forbidden to display their bodies between the naval and the knees... they must wear loose clothing (not transparent); they must always wear their pants "ABOVE" their ankles; they are forbidden to wear silk/gold; they are forbidden to shave their faces, as well as imitating the dress of non-Muslims. Muslim men and women should be dressed in a manner that they can be distinguished immediately as a "MUSLIM".
Many non-Muslims (as well as some Muslims) have such a difficult time understanding "HIJAB"... but it is quite simple.. we do it because our Creator, Almighty GOD, has commanded us to do so. And HE should know, above anybody else, what is best for HIS creation!!!
Nuns cover their hair/bodies (well.. not all nuns nowadays, unfortunately)... Jewish women cover their hair with wigs, and Christian women are commanded in their religion (in the Bible) to cover their heads while in Church... etc.
With ISLAAM, Almighty GOD (Mighty and Majestic) gave the answers to everything, and commanding men and women to dress modestly is definitely part of that... and we don't dare question our Creator as to "why". It's not about obeying "men"... it's about obeying GOD!!!!

How can oppress anyone when in the Qumran it says oppression is worse then murder? how can we oppress a women when our mothers are women? Our mothers we love them more then our fathers 3times more ... and in a Hadlee the prophet (pub) said " Janna is beneath the mothers feet " and in the Qumran Allah(swt) says we cant even say "Uff" to our mothers ... and in a hadeeth prophet muhammed (pbuh) said that " the best of you is the best to his wives " So their is NO OPPRESSION IN ISLAM FOR OPPRESSION IS HARAM .
About the hijab my sister , its an obligation (fard) for a women to wear it . Their is a logical answer .... but first let me explain to you that the hijab helps save a womens modesty ... and men also have hijab ... in the quran surat al nur allah (swt) says " qul el momineena yaghtho absareehum wa yuhafeetho foroajhum " ( Tell the believing man to lower his gaze and protect his private parts ) lowering the gaze is a mans hijab ... now the logical part for a women wearing hijab is this :
Imagine : TWO girls walking down a street .. One girl is wearing hijab and the other girl is wearing a skirt , her hair is done with full make up on her face .. Who is more likely to be raped or seduced ??
Mary the mother of Jesus PBUH covered her hair. Even bible teaches you to cover hair but I highly doubt if there's a single practicing Christian on Earth.

As for Men covering parts of their body, no men do not have to cover the face and hands. Men are the ones who fight in battle fields and this is just how God Created men.
In Islam, the reward that men can never eve achieve while every woman does is pregnancy. You should refer to the rewards of giving birth to a Muslim Child in Islam.

The hi jab is a cultural dress worn by even gays/lesbians, prostitutes, cross dressers etc. There is NOTHING modest about it. Muslims mention about the Nuns to defend Islam but Is mentioning about Nuns really a good reason? Nuns are not suicide bombers.
