It means modesty. The Quran mentions neither the hair nor the head.

?O you Children of Adam! We have bestowed on you raiment to cover your shame as well as to be an adornment to you. But the raiment of righteousness, that is the best. Such are among the Signs of Allah, that they may receive admonition.? (Quran 7:26)

?And say to the believing women that they should lower their gaze and guard their modesty; that they should not display their beauty and ornaments except what must ordinarily appear thereof; that they should draw their veils over their bosoms and not display their beauty except to their husbands, their fathers, their husbands' fathers, their sons, their husbands' sons, their brothers, or their brothers' sons or their sisters' sons, or their women or the servants whom their right hands possess, or male servants free of physical needs, or small children who have no sense of the shame of sex, and that they should not strike their feet in order to draw attention to their hidden ornaments. And O you Believers, turn you all together towards Allah, that you may attain Bliss.? (Quran 24:31).

?O Prophet, tell your wives and your daughters and the women of the believers to draw their cloaks close round them (when they go abroad). That will be better, so that they may be recognized and not annoyed. Allah is ever Forgiving, Merciful.? (Quran 33:59)

during the many centuries that followed Prophet Muhammad (pub), women of the Islamic societies had a much higher social position than the women of Christendom. Karen Armstrong emphasizes that, during the Middle Ages;
... the Muslims were horrified to see the way Western Christians treated their women in the Crusader states, and Christian scholars denounced Islam for giving too much power to menials like slaves and women.
Anna King, a modern Muslim woman and a convert - or, better to say, a revert - to Islam, explains the Islamic emancipation of women as follows:
Islam gave women the right to buy and sell on their own, own businesses and express her views politically, also encouraged women to study and learn Islamic knowledge, breaking a ban which several beliefs had stipulated, which forbid women to acquire any religious knowledge or touch religious texts... It also abolished the practice of marrying a woman without her consent.
Thus, the mentality that despises women, excludes them from society and regards them as second class citizens has no place in Islam.
================================================== ==================================
THE RIGHT OF A MUSLIM WOMAN IS TO BE RESPECTED FOR HER MIND AND FOR BEING HER OWN PERSON- Islam Gives Men and Women Equal Rights
"O You who believe! You are forbidden to inherit women against their will, and you should not treat them with harshness,? And live with them honorably. If you dislike them, it may be that you dislike a thing and God brings through it a great deal of good." (Quran- 4:19)

1. The RIGHT and duty to acquire education.
2. The RIGHT to have her own independent property.
3. The RIGHT to work [job or business] to earn money, which she keeps.
4. The RIGHT to equal reward for equal deed and/or work.
5. The RIGHT to express her opinion.
6. The RIGHT to argue and/or advocate her cause or opinion to be heard.
7. The RIGHT to vote since 579 A.D.
8. The RIGHT to provisions from her husband for all her needs and more.
9. The RIGHT to negotiate marriage terms of her choice.
10.The RIGHT to obtain divorce from her husband, even on the grounds that she simply don't like him. In Islaam divorce is suppose to be last resort.
11.The RIGHT to keep all her own money. [She is not responsible for maintenance of family].
12.The RIGHT to get sexual satisfaction from her husband.
13.The RIGHT to get custody of her children in case of divorce [unless she is unable to raise them for valid reasons]
14.The RIGHT to choose husband of her choice.
15.The RIGHT to refuse a proposed and/or arranged marriage.
16. The RIGHT to re-marry after divorce or after becoming widow. 17. An Islamic law does not require that women should confine themselves to household duties.
Muslim women have [and are as well] headed Islamic provinces [and states as well], like Arwa bunt Ahmad, who served as governor of Yemen under the Fatimid Khalifahs in the late fifth and early sixth century.
Name any other religion, political theory, or philosophy which offers such a comprehensiveness to women by giving her total control of her life and affairs ??? NONE
Islam considers a woman to be equal to a man as a human being. Women have been created with a soul of the same nature as man?s. Islam does not blame Eve alone for the First Sin. The Quran makes it very clear that both Adam and Eve were tempted, that they both sinned and were both forgiven after their repentance.

did any women have to wear the hi jab before Islam. did Mohammad's first wife wear it? NO! Mohammad was a old man married to several beautiful young wives and was jealous of the younger men of Medina and when he allowed one of his wives out of their homes he forced them to wear the hi jab. Muslims today are just following the example of their prophet. please! look it up as i did. it is very easy to find the truth if you look for it and stop the brainwashing and lies!!!!! edit; green why have you posted so many lies about Islam. have you ever read the Qumran? i have and took over 550 pages of notes as i read it. maybe you should do the same and learn the truth about Islam........ no muslim must never look up the truth! they must always block it and never learn the truth! why is it a sin for a muslim to read the quran and hadiths? is it because they are told that arabic is the only language in the world that can't be translated properly???????? edit;did slave girls have to wear the hijab or where they allowed to be raped by their muslim owners??

Hijab, is not just the head scarf. It is the whole outfit. You have to dress according to the Islamic dress code topped off with the headscarf!! Sadly, some hijacks just think hi jab is just the headscarf, so they don't dress modestly.

Salam There is no definition about what is hi jab according to the Qur'an.. Based on Sarah 33 Al Ahzab verse 59 all grown up Muslim women should wear hub as mandatory which should be spread out to cover all of their aura ts including their hair,necks and breasts so only their faces and arms can be seen.By wearing hi jab she will be looked different compared to non Muslim women and she would not be disturbed by bad guys A woman who wears it will be modesty and looked more beautiful

hi jab means "covering"..
which also can be used in the context of covering of ones own modesty, Your manner of conduct in this world, both physically and mentally.... Hijab is addressed to both genders men and women alike..
even is you cover yourself in modest clothing, you still have to have a "hi jab' of your conduct.. Act well, modest, chaste and honest in everything you do in life..

@ the person above who claims no one wore a head covering before Islam... just go ogle any image of Mary the mother of Jesus and see what she has on her head.. Also christian and Jewish women int he middle east cover their heads.. they respect and honor their biblical rules much more than western women do...
