Default Jainism is absolutely insane, this is by far the craziest religion I have ever heard

Does anyone agree with me? The whole religion is crazy (not trying to insult anybody). But, really, it's all about extreme self-denial and austerity. I sort of appreciate the 'non-violence' aspects of it, but they take it a little too far. Some wear masks over their mouth and nose so the breath in and 'kill' any tiny insects! I even heard that some of them carry brooms around with them when they walk so that the can sweep in front of where they're about to step so that they don't step on any insects. And they most insane part about it is one of the worst things you can do as a Jain is have a desire for a pleasurable life. Most of them kill themselves by fasting to death, and this form of self-killing is a highly regarded and publicly celebrated positive aspiration in Jainism. But there has even been occasions where a seriously devoted Jain found themselves having a desire for life, that they set themselves on fire and burned, without even crying out in pain. This religion just creeps me out... any opinions?

Yeah...religion is crazy sh*t. The human mind is capable of truly bizarre ways of thinking. On one hand you have serial rapists and child molesters, on the other hand hardcore ascetics who would rather kill themselves than harm anything that moves.

Right and wrong...who defines them anyway?

It's probably the most reasonable religion of them all.

Not all Jains do or agree with those things you described. But it is very demanding from what I know. The Buddha cautioned against extreme asceticism and vice.

At least they are friendly, the Westboro Baptist Church and Scientologists are the real crazies. Jains have a deep respect for everyone (and everything). They take it a bit far (like PETA on crack) but they have good intentions.

I think Raelism wins in that category.

And several others beat out Jainism. You're citing extreme followers. Some Buddhists have set themselves on fire. There were many instances during the Vietnam War.

It's crazy, but on the upside they won't be starting any wars! And it doesn't spread well due to all the suicide.

As opposed to all the other, more blood-thirsty religions? Yeah, sure, crazy. What did a Jain ever do to you? Give you a guilt attack?

it may be a little OTT .. but I would rather a religion that cares about non violence above others
more power to them I say

of course there are extremists ... but at least they are not harming others

What a person does to oneself is their business.

I think people that say "Drink this Koolaid" I would be more worried about.
