Jainism, in contrast to Hinduism, is based upon a founder and leader known as Mahavira. This name actually is an honorific title signifying "great man." Tradition places the birth of Mahavira at 599 B.C. in northeastern India, which would make him a contemporary of Buddha. Tradition also relates that Mahavira was the second son of a rajah living in luxurious surroundings. He married and had one daughter.

When his parents died, Mahavira decided at the age of 30 to live a life of self-denial, pledging to deny himself the care of his body and not to speak for 12 years. After a short time, Mahavira put off the robe he wore and wandered naked through India receiving injuries from both man and beast. He wandered for 12 years until he reached enlightenment at the age of 42.

The Sacred Books of the East record, "During the thirteenth year, in a squatting position ... exposing himself to the heat of the sun ... with knees high and the head low, in deep meditation, in the midst of abstract meditation he reached nirvana, the complete and full, the unobstructed, infinite absolute" (F. M. Mueller, ed., Sacred Books of the East, Vol. 22, Oxford: Krishna Press, 1879-1910, p. 201).

After reaching enlightenment, Mahavira stopped living by himself and took on disciples, preaching his new-found belief. So he continued to live until the end of his life, at which time he was said to have over 14,000 monks in his brotherhood (Maurice Rawlings, Life-Wish: Reincarnation: Reality or Hoax, Nashville: Thomas Nelson Inc., 1981, p. 63).

I've heard of it. It's kind of like Buddhism and Hinduism, but it
's big on rejecting all worldly things. Reclusiveness is important. . Non-violence is important too.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jainism

Jainism, traditionally known as Jain Dharma (A A), is one of the oldest religions in the world. It is a religion and philosophy originating in Ancient India. The Jains follow the teachings of the 24 Jinas (conquerors) who are also known as Tirthankaras. The 24Th Tirthankara, Lord Mahavira lived in ca. 6Th century BC. One of the main characteristics of Jain belief is the emphasis on the immediate consequences of ones behavior.[1]

Jains are a small but influential religious minority with at least 4.2 million practitioners in modern India[2] and more in growing immigrant communities in the United States, Western Europe, Africa, the Far East and elsewhere, Jains continue to sustain the ancient Shraman (?????) or ascetic tradition.

Jains have significantly influenced the religious, ethical, political and economic spheres in India for over two millennia. Jainism stresses spiritual independence and equality of all life with particular emphasis on non-violence. Self-control (????, vratae) is vital for attaining omniscience (kevala jnana) and eventually moksha, or realization of the soul's true nature.

Jains have an ancient tradition of scholarship. The Jain community is the most literate religious community in India,[3] and the Jain libraries are India's oldest.[4]

It is a religion that reveals the truth of the Universe. However, it is not the only religion. Other religions of the Dharmic fold, Hinduism, Buddhism, Sikhism and Taoism have all revealed the truth. Jainism and Buddhism originated because a lot of corruption had spread in the Hindu society in ancient India.

Sounds like a cult. Be careful, or you will end up trying to meet a spaceship hiding behind a comet.

On second thought, do you think that the "truth" is just now being revealed, or that somehow your generation is different than the hundreds and thousands that come before you?

The truth was revealed a long time ago. He is often misrepresented, but 2000 years later people are still finding Him fascinating. He is so significant, His birth divided time.

Every religion claims to be the only one to have revealed the truth of the universe. The first answerer gave a decent cut-and-paste on Jainism. It's an ancient Indian religion based on the teachings of the 24 "Jinas" or conquerors, of whom Lord Mahavira is the most famous.

That's strange.... I read that when you reach Nirvana you are no longer conscious of your own individuality.... Cox your consciousness is melted into the universal consciousness... go figure what that means... this is what i found out when i studied it years ago... later on, i found out that the religion of the bible has much more to offer... eternal bliss in an immortal, incorruptible body, in the presence of God and Christ and the angels and the privilege to visit all the other worlds throughout immensity...

The choice is clear!

No, you are mistaken. Every religion has at its core these fundamental truths about the nature of being/reality - the truths science is only beginning to understand.

Jainism, however, is a ancient and authoritative legacy of understanding - "stresses spiritual independence and equality of all life with particular emphasis on non-violence, in which self-control is vital for attaining omniscience (Kevlar Janna) and eventually Misha, or realization of the soul's true nature."

Because god/reality mirrors the contents of consciousness, every adept who has ever lived has tried to provide a way/path of transcending the conditioned ego identity and return to the authentic Self, after which reality synchronizes with being. Religious dogma always degenerates into rule-bound guidelines for behavior as opposed to the transformational psychology at its source.

Yes, I'm Jain. Well, I'm not a very good Jain, and I'm definitely no authority on it, but I was born into a very religious family. And yes, you are correct. Most discoveries that science is now claiming to find was predicted in the Kalpa Sutra (one of the Jain holy books).
The Karma theory is big in it and so is living and letting live. That's why they don't send out missionaries and their religion is really tiny. They believe that anyone is entitled to their own beliefs and unless you ask a Jain about their religion, they can't come up to you and start preaching.
I'm part of a young professionals Jain group where we discuss the religion and issues we face growing up in America where no ones ever heard of us, let alone respects us. So feel free to e-mail me with any questions. I'll bring it up at our next meeting and let you know what we come up with.
