Default Jainism is characterized by all of the following beliefs except:?

a.The purpose of life is to purify one?s soul and obtain a state of permanent bliss
b.Prayer rituals to the gods must be strictly observed so that the gods will intercede in the universe to aid the believer
c.Asceticism is the means to purify the soul
d.Every living creature has a soul and must not be harmed

I think the answer is b but apparently it's not because I got it wrong. I still think it's the write answer.

You might be thinking of Buddhism. I really can't remember, even though my class was only a few years ago. The Jains might not believe in the purification of the soul. Whatever we do affects the next incarnation. The super good will be born in heaven, the super bad will be born in hell, but those souls will still participate in reincarnation.

No, maybe I'm the one who's mixing things up with Buddhism.

Well b is wrong because Jainism is atheistic. Take this link to your teacher, it states that there is no creator in Jainism: http://www.jainnet.com/intro.html The rest are true, the first is similar to the achievement of Nirvana, they are extremely ascetic, and they take nonviolence or ahems to the extreme, wearing face masks so as not to breathe any organisms, filter water so they don't drink any, and sweep their path so they don't step on any.

The answer is B. Jains do not believe in gods which intercede in the universe based on prayer. Furthermore, the ultimate goal of the Jain is to attain separation of their soul from the material universe (or purity). They do not care about getting special blessings from believing, and blessings will even interfere with the asceticism which they believe purifies them.

Strictly speaking, A is also false, but only because of the term "permanent." For a Jain, the cosmos is cyclical. While the Jain strives to attain separation of the soul from matter, they also believe that all souls will again be entangled with matter in the distant future.

Nevertheless, B is much more false, and is completely off base.

You're right: B is definitely the right answer.
Although not all Jainists are atheists they don't worship gods.
