Jainism (pronounced in English as IPA [DE.n?zm?]), traditionally known as Jain Dharma (A A), is a diatomic religion and philosophy originating in Ancient India. The Jains follow the teachings of Tirthankaras. The 24Th Tirthankara Lord Mahavira lived in ca. 6Th century BC. A small but influential minority in modern India, with growing immigrant communities in the United States, Western Europe, Africa, the Far East and elsewhere, Jains continue to sustain the ancient Shraman (?????) or ascetic tradition.

Jains have significantly influenced the religious, ethical, political and economic spheres in India for more than two millennia. Jainism stresses spiritual independence and equality of all life with particular emphasis on non-violence. Self-control (????, vratae) is vital for attaining Keval Gnan and eventually moksha, or realization of the soul's true nature.

The Jains have an ancient tradition of scholarship. The Jains are the best educated community in India (Jains in India according to 2001 census), and the Jain libraries are India's oldest.

I think u are referring to NaomaARantra and not ramokar mantra..

Namo ariha.ntaaNaM
Namo siddhaaNaM
Namo aayariyaaNaM
Namo uvajjhaayaaNaM
Namo loe savvasaahuNaM

eso pa.ncha Namokaaro
savva paavapaNaasaNo
ma.ngalaaNaM cha savvesim
paDhamaM hava{ii} ma.ngalaM

I bow to the Arahants, the perfected human beings.
I bow to the Siddhas, liberated bodiless souls.
I bow to the Acharyas, the masters and heads of congregations.
I bow to the Upadhyayas, the spiritual teachers.
I bow to the spiritual practitioners in the universe, Sadhus.

This fivefold obeisance mantra,
Destroys all sins and obstacles,
And of all auspicious repetitions,
Is the first and foremost.

The gist of Navkar mantra (also pronounced Namokar mantra) in Jainism-

The first prayer of Navkar mantra "Namo Arihantanam" is addressed to Arihantas... those human beings who gains enlightenment (cavalry Janna) in their lifetime.

The second prayer of Navkar mantra "Namo Siddhanam" addresses Siddha Purusha... those enlightened souls who gained enlightenment and reached the stage of salvation (aka moksha in Hinduism).

A Siddha Purusha a step higher than Arihanta... still the first prayer is addressed to Arihantas. Why?

When Mahavira (the 24th Tirthankara of Jainism) gained enlightenment (kaivalya jnana)... he wanted to disseminate the pearls of wisdom he had gained on the spiritual path before he left is mortal frame and gained salvation (moksha). One would be surprised to know that for months Mahavira kept quite. Why?

There was none on Mother Earth who could understand the gist of his sayings so he kept mum. As fate (rather luck) would have it there was one Gautama Gani would have clearly understood the teachings of Mahavira but for some reasons he was deadly against the teachings of Mahavira and shunned him bitterly.

Unless Gautama Gani came and took the messages spoken by Mahavira... the whole wisdom gained by Mahavira would go waste. Some wise people in the society seeing the predicament of Mahavira (and also Gautama Gani... who was being deprived of the wisdom of Mahavira) tactfully managed to bring Gautama Gani to the discourse of Mahavira.

Sooner Gautama Gani was available... outpoured the wisdom of Mahavira.

Gautama Gani was a kaivalya Jnani... one who had gained enlightenment. He was an Arihanta. The first prayer is addressed to him for in his absence the wisdom of a Siddha Purusha goes vain. The second prayer is addressed to one who had reached the pinnacle of spiritual glory...) for millionth manifestation... the last in the cosmic life cycle!

The third prayer "Namo Ayriyanam" is addressed to spiritual masters... the guru (principal) of the spiritual colleges. It was these spiritual masters who further spread the teachings of Arihantas to their students and the wise. Still, the wisdom did not percolate to the masses.

The fourth prayer "Namo Uvajjhayanam" takes care of this. This prayer is addressed to all student community and the wise that further disseminated the pearls of wisdom to the commoner... the masses! These students were teachers in their own respect. Having gained wisdom from the spiritual master... they opened small institutions in their towns and villages where they spread the messages to the masses.

The first prayer "Namo Loe Savva-sahunam" is finally addressed to all godly souls... each and every person on the spiritual path! Unless a percentage of the society engrosses itself in learning the pearls of wisdom... a fair improvement in the community would not be possible. Every human being who has even the minutest trace of spirituality within comes under this prayer. The fifth prayer is addressed to such people.

The Navkar mantra of Jainism is a very composite mantra that covers possibly every human being on Mother Earth... a noble task indeed! More on Namokar Mantra - http://www.godrealized.org/navkar_mantra_in_jainism.html
