This is the answer I just typed up for another question. Hope you don't mind if I cut and paste from there - but it's basically the same question.

Buddhism was started around 600 BC in India with Siddhartha Guatama. He was a prince. His father was told his son would either be a teacher or a king - not both. So the King kept Siddhartha in the castle all his life. One day Siddhartha left the castle and he saw a sick man, a dead man, an old man, and a monk (Hindi Ascetic).

He then decided to be a teacher (I bet his father was pissed).

That was at Te age of 29. At the age (roughly) of 35 he had a vision while fasting and praying undertow a tree. He attained enlightenment. He listed the 4 noble truths.

1. To live is to suffer
2. Suffering is caused by desire
3. To end suffering you must end desire
4. To do this you must follow the 8 fold path

The 8 fold path is having the right view, right intention, right speech, right action, right livelihood, right effort, right mindfulness, and right concentration.

The scriptures are called The Dharma.

You can look on line for more specifics.

I am quite familiar with religions and Buddhism is one of them but I have absolutely no idea about Jainism, and I'm not even sure where the religion started up or who apparently started up this religion. So I can't really help you there but in Buddhism they believed in restoration and reincarnation which help the soul and body.

I practice Falun Gong and you can get familiar with the Buddhist teachings from the web site below.

In original Buddhism, 'What Shakyamuni taught was called ?Precept, Concentration, Wisdom.? ' see page #178 of the Zhuan Falun Lecture on the web for details.

Falun Gong is a unique Buddhist School, sharing some basic thinking of Buddhism: such as rebirth, karma and its transformation through meditation, karmic relationship, and enlightenment.

"Up at an extremely high level you can summarize it in just three words: True, Good, Endure." see page #7 in the Lecture. The teachings of Falun Gong include topics of the practice of Daoist (Truthfulness), "A Calm Mind", cultivation levels, special abilities, "Energy Field", "Spirit Possession", "On Killing", "Eating Meat", and "Jealousy". Falun Gong consists of five sets of powerful exercises, that improve the mind, body, and spirit.

Falun Gong, Tibetans, other Buddhists, and Christians have been persecuted in China. The most offensive human right violation is the organ harvesting from the Falun Gong practitioners in China.

Can you sign a petition drive to support Falun Gong practitioners ahead of the Beijing Olympics, please ?

Thanks.
