Jainism is an offshoot of Hinduism. Its followers follow the teachings of Lord Mahavira. Jain beliefs are very similar to Hindu beliefs, and the two religions have very much in common. Jains, like Hindus, believe very strongly in ahems [nonviolence], self control, and the sacred nature of all life. They also share the Hindu belief that God is the eternal, the universe, called Brahman by the Hindus [ not sure if the Jains also call it Brahman] and that the human soul is also part of that entity.
Jains are vegetarian because of their belief in ahems and that life is sacred. Sometimes very religious Jains cover their mouths with a cloth when outside to avoid allowing bacteria into their mouths because they want to prevent the death of the bacteria.
