Jainism did not actually thrive in India. Due to its strict and demanding ethics regarding every single tangible object as having a soul, it was not a practical religious alternatives compared to other religions of salvation such as Hinduism or Buddhism. It was simply too difficult or even impossible for most people to observe.
Although India was the birth place of Buddhism, it did die out. This decline was due to Turkish migrations into India which eventually displaced Buddhism, hastened by the destruction of Buddhist setups, shrines, and libraries.
However Hinduism survived and become popular through the remarkable growth of devotional cults such as Vishnu and Shiva.
