Default Question about Jewish beliefs?

I believe that I heard once during class a Jewish boy say something about Jews believing that after bad times come good times. Can anyone who is Jewish confirm this? And if so, can you make a specific reference (IE. a quote)?

you mean a generic statement, anybody can say that. why do you need a quote to verify good things can happen after bad things occur?

You mean, you don't believe that there is some sort of karmic balance that makes good balance out bad?

Yeah, but I don't think it's Jewish. I think it's human.

I think most people believe this. There is another saying, "Every cloud has a silver lining."

It's what any mother might say to comfort a child.

Judaism's sages have tended to regard time as being cyclical; the general way of describing it would be like a helix, or somewhat like the phases of the moon (which waxes and wanes). Those would constitute metaphors for the notion that good times follow bad times, and vice verse. As for a quotation, I bring this one to the table:

"The Sages tell us to study history carefully. For what happened to our forebears is bound to happen to us again."

- The Ramban (Rabbi Moshe Ben Nachman), commentary on the Torah
