What are the basic tenets of Christianity,Judaism, and Islam?
I grew up in a non-religious home. Lately I am curious in knowing more about these religions to see what all the fuss is about. I've read Viki articles and have done basic research but would be interested on how you express the similarities and differences. Just a short blurb. I'm thinking about getting involved with one of these so please help me make my choice! Thanks!
That you are chosen, or have chosen the true religion, and that all others will go to hell. That, and donate your money to them, and believe whatever they say, no matter how it goes against the prophet's words (Jesus, Moses, Muhammad)
In short, Islam is not a "new religion"..It is the belief in One God, who has no partners, no sons, and no daughters..This God, created the universe, and all of mankind. Through time, he chose people as "Messengers" or "Prophets" who came to tell mankind the good news about life on earth, and life after death..Some great Prophets were Moses, Kind David, and Jesus. This One God sent the Torah (the Old Testament), The Bible, the 10 Commandments, and the last book, The Koran. The Koran was sent to a man named Muhammad, who was the last Prophet who came re-emphasizing the same things Jesus, Moses and all the Prophets said.
Many people will write you that Jesus is the Savior and the only way to be "saved". That is not true.
Islam teaches: there is only 1 God. This life is a test to receive our real reward in Paradise, which will be similar to our lives on earth. We must do Good Deeds: help others, forgive those who hurt us, restrain our anger--in order to receive Gods Mercy and Favor. We must love each other, and not be see differences based on skin color .Islam teaches that people of ALL religions--Jews, Christians, and anyone who truly loves God and does good--will enter Paradise.
The similarities is a Deity or God, reading a book of scriptures and worship.
The differences are Christians try and be peaceful and loving (except here at R&S where they are or nary, due to too many Atheists and others taunting them about Sky Daddies) and tolerant, although some sects seem to be the opposite and they also believe in Jesus, the Christ or son of God on Earth from God and Human and his teachings.
Modern Christianity was a melding of Pagan beliefs, teachings of Jesus and the scriptures and rough approximations of Judaistic rituals as defined by the directions of Pargan emperor Constantine in 300 AD and has evolved into the Catholic Church.
Catholics believe in a supreme ruler, the Pope, who said to be taking the place of Jesus and Peter as the head or leader of the Church and is elected by high priests (Cardinals) after the death of a Pope. This tradition has gone on for about 1600 or so years.
Catholics originally only printed the bible and spoke in Latin. They printed local language bibles in the 1600s and started speaking in local language about 45 years ago.
The Pope interprets the Bible, the wishes of Jesus and God and all must follow. They have lots of rituals including communion (eating of wafers and drinking of wine, an approximation of Passover rituals from Judaism), kneeling, making the sign of the cross. They also revere Saints and Jesus Mother, the Virgin Mary. They also believe in the confession of sins in seclusion and anomimity to a priest who witnesses and assignes pennace (duties) as part of the cleansing or repenttance process. They don't believe in abortion, artificial birth control or divorce of spouse. Priests can't marry, women can't be priests.
The Eastern faction broke off from the primary Roman Catholic faction around 1100 and no longer follow the edicts of the Pope, they also have slightly different ceremonies, different days for some events and allow pirests to marry.
Protestants came as a result of Calvin, Henry VIII and Martin Luther and a few others. Henry wanted a divorce the church wouldn't let him ahve one, so he made is own Chruch of England.
Luther opposed the Chruch accepting money for forgiveness of sins in advance and started his own relgion which preached in local language, let peopel read the bible (Catholics basically didn't allow this) and make up their own minds on God and Jesus and religion. He also let priests marry and started allowing for divorce.
Jesus, himself, was a traidtional Jew with more liberal views on Jewish law and interprtation of the Bible from God. He was also Baptized in water by John the BAptist. Jesus, however, kept ot Judaism traiditions.
The roots of Christianity is Judaism with changes and modifications. Judaisim stems from a period just after the creation by God and enumerated by Abraham and Moses and others. Judiasm beleives in a saviour from God, but says they haven't come yet and Jesus isn't that one. They also beleive they are the chosen people of God.
Judaism has no name for God and will not spell it out but will write it as G-d.
They often call God the Creator. The saviour would be the Messaiah (who hasn't come yet).
Judaism is over 5,700 years old. Christianity about 2,000 years.
Islam came about in 700 AD and claims common linage and acnestry with Judiasm and Christianity, but Jews and Christians don't accept this position.
They call their God Allah and say it is the same God as Abrahams (Jewish and Christian).
They have a different book of scriptures.
Jews and Muslims worship on Fridaynight to Saturday. Most Christians on Sunday.
