answer: I'm betting you haven't read the Talmud, which clarifies the Torah (contained in the Tanakh) and have MISSED the part where to find someone guilty of a capital offense you need a lot more evidence than modern day courts require. In other words, rarely were those harsh penalties instituted. Much like in the US, several states have the death penalty for murder but few murderers in those states are sentenced to death.
Which "extreme" laws are actually enforced based on religion?
Not the Bible nor the Tanakh.
In other words, which religion hasn't come out of the Dark Ages?
