Default Jews, urgent help plz, I'm thinking about going to a synagogue as a visitor tomorrow?

Hi, I'm thinking about going to a synagogue as a visitor tomorrow so I need help quick!

1) What kind of synagogue should I go to? I go ogled synagogues in my area and I found reform, conservative, etc. ones and I'm not sure which would be the best to go to

2) What should I wear?

3) How do I go as just a visitor? Should I tell someone before I go?

Thanks
Synagogue services are on Saturday, right?
@ Rico JPA, thanks for the advice. I should plan a little more before I go and go next week instead
Can a woman wear slacks to the synagogue? I don't think my dresses are long enough to wear to a religious service

Well, you won't get many answers from conservative or orthodox Jews tonight, since the Sabbath started at sundown, very few get on line.

I'd start with Reform, in any case, however. Where nice clothing, a shirt, tie, slacks.

Yeah, you can just show up and sit down. But you might want to put it off for another week and contact the temple during the week.

Yes. Most synagogues have services on Friday night and Saturday morning. Usually Saturday morning services are when the Torah is taken down and read from.

1) Which synagogue you would prefer depends on whether you want a traditional synagogue or a non-traditional synagogue. Reform Judaism does not believe that Halakhah is binding. Orthodox Judaism believes in a full commitment to Halakhah. Whether or not Conservative Judaism believes in Halakhah is debatable. In Orthodox, there is modern Orthodox and other Orthodox branches.

I will be attending a Conservative synagogue tomorrow, and would give the same advice. Reform first, call ahead, dress nicely, someone will be assigned to sit with you, and do what they say. It isn't really like visiting another planet, so relax. There will be plenty of English and some Hebrew.

1) It depends on what type of experience you're looking for. A Reform synagogue is a good intro because most of the service is in English, men & women are not separated, and it's overall quite similar to a church service. Conservative services involve more Hebrew language and incorporate more of traditional Orthodox practices, but they are more a bridge between traditional Judaism and modern assimilated life (which is fine; that was not a judgment). If you want to see real, authentic, traditional Judaism, however, I would recommend you visit a Modern Orthodox synagogue. The more old world Orthodox, however, may not be so accommodating to a non-Jewish visitor simply because they take their religion very, very seriously (obviously, hence the designation "Orthodox") and do not see their worship as something to be causally observed by an outsider (this does not mean that they're not good people).

2) If you go for a Shabbat (Saturday) or holiday service, a suit is the proper dress for a male; women should wear a nice dress.

3) I STRONGLY recommend you talk to someone before you just wander in unannounced. Because of both unfortunate trends in history and modern "politics", Jews are leery of outsiders coming into synagogues. It would be wiser and more respectful to approach a rabbi or congregant and talk about your interest, then arrange a visit.

Above all, please be respectful.

EDIT: As long as your hem comes down to your knees, you should be fine (though I'm going by Orthodox standards). As for slacks, I think I remember women wearing them t some synagogues I've been to. But I haven't been in quite some time...
