that's a good question. I wondered how anyone got the image to portray Jesus, during the past 2,000 years of all the paintings that had been done of him? He didn't pose for any back in his day, so how did all the medieval painters know how to portray him?
Just recently I was kinda near puking. I'd seen a certain publication of him, and he was always portrayed with some middle eastern influence in his features. But the publication had a new version, and he looked more like some older surfer dude from California.....he was totally Caucasian. Yuck.
Basically, many versions of his image exist. some even consider he was actually more black than white. So my suggestion is to find an image you prefer, and then stick with it.
