The LDS church believes in continual prophetic revelation.
If this we rent the case then most of the Bible wouldn't have occur ed because things switch around in the Bible, too.
Prophets and revelation has always been the way God has led his church.

Diff groups of people and societies have diff needs.

I strongly think (and its just opinion) that polygamy and the law of consecration were followed in the early church to bond the members together so that the early church could make it Thur the intense obstacles they faced.
