Question for mormons: Why did God appear to Joseph Smith in the first place?

I have heard a few different stories about this, but I'm not sure which one is true. Is the true story told in the book of Mormon?
If God the Father, and Jesus the Son of God appeared to Joseph Smith and he saw their faces, why didn't he die as the Bible says?

The bible says that if God appears to man, he will die, so it was a demon that appeared to Joseph smith, demons are shape shifters, what do you think ghosts are?

In 1830, a young fifteen year old boy, wanted to know which church was right, so he read in James 1:5 ''If any of ye lack wisdom, let him ask of God, that girth liberally, and upbraided not, and it shall be given!!''
So he went into the woods, and prayed! God, AND Jesus both appeared to him, in a shining bright light, and God said ''This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased!! Hear Ye Him''! Jesus then told Joseph not to join any of the churches saying, that they spoke of Him with their mouths, but not with their hearts!
And that HE Christ would RESTORE His gospel to the earth, through Joseph Smith!
Joseph would be given the history of a people who lived in the Americas, and that he would be given the power to translate the Plates that it was written on!
