There are many sources that confirm that he was definitely practicing polygamy.
If you say he only had one wife, you need to hit the history books for a few weeks.
36, or somewhere around there. When I was going to church, however, Emma Smith was the only one who was ever mentioned. I didn't even find out he had other ones until after I left the church. The girl above who said he had only one may need to do some research.
He had one legal wife. I'm not sure what one would call all the other women with whom he consorted while still alive, or the others sealed to him after his death.

Does it really matter since all of them are now dead? No.
Do the LDS currently practice polygamy? NO...it's illegal
So, since the answers to all those questions are "NO", what part of this do YOU not understand? Early members did practice polygamy, but not since there became a law against it. The ONLY reason it is against the law is because people thought they could stop Mormonism if they stopped plural marriages. I guess we showed them, didn't we?
We have the freedom of religion just like you. If we are wrong, we are not hurting anyone but ourselves. Now, get over yourself and get a life!
Since he married many of them secretly, it is hard to know for sure...it's suspected he had over 80 women sealed to him for "time and all eternity" in the temple...but there have only been 34 women PROVEN to be married to him (only 34! Lil). At least 11 of these women are known to have had living husbands at the time of their marriage to Jo Smith.
To the annoying chic with deify glasses above.. The point is that the Mormon church, while saying that Polygamy was practiced - never mention anything about Josephs NUMEROUS wives. Like the pussycat above, I believed that Joseph had one wife until after I started doing research and found out the truth. Why are the Mormons trying to downplay this, if it was such an important part of their religion when they started.
And then there are the Mormons that DO actually admit this, but then follow it with "Well, they never had sex".. like they would know this.
Both Sarah and Emily above demonstrate the effect of their vision occluded by the lining of their colon: "Only One!" and "Who Cares?"
The first response shows a total lack of understanding of history and reality, while the latter shows a complete disregard of both. Fortunately neither poster speaks for the church, and neither understands the gospel well enough to comment intelligently.
To clarify, several of Smith wives were sealed after his death, but the point is he *did* boink many women who were not his wife, and attempted to justify it by saying, "The OT bible guys did it too, so I can, too.."
That's an extraordinarily weak, if not preposterous, rationale, and the decrepit imbeciles who followed this depraved teaching would've been shot.
