Default LDS, Mormon Why was Elijah Abel's ( that Smith gave the "priesthood" too) priesthood

Because Joseph F. Smith said it was not to have happened?
Joseph Fielding Smith...
(not the founder but a later Mormon prophet, for those who are not Mormon or might confuse the two) About Elijah Able, the black man that Joseph Smith (founder of the Mormon church) gave the Mormon priesthood too)
*after that ALL "other" Mormon black men were not allowed the Mormon "priesthood" until 1978.
SOURCES...
*Joseph F Smith suggested that there were two men named Elijah Abel; the historian had confused the ?names and the work done by one man named Abel ? with the name of the Negro who joined the Church in an early day.? (Joseph Fielding Smith to Mrs. Floren S. Preece, 18 Jan. 1955, S. George Ellsworth Papers, Utah State University, Logan)

AND
*. Later he said,
??It is true that elders of the church laid hands on a Negro and blessed him ?apparently? with the Priesthood, but they could not give that which the Lord had denied. It is true that Elijah Abel was so ?ordained.? This was however before the matter had been submitted to the Prophet Joseph Smith. ?It was after wards that the Prophet Joseph Smith declared that the Negro was not to be ordained.? (Letter from Joseph Fielding Smith to Joseph H. Henderson, April 10, 1963)
*He said the Joseph Smith later declared that the Negro was not to be ordained. That is was not to be allowed, from God.

About....
Zebedee Coltrin, The man in the temple that did the washing and anointing for able said he had a bad feeling about it....He suggested, that Abel had "been ordained before the word of the Lord was fully understood." Coltrin also recalled that: "In the washing and Annointing of Bro Abel at Kirtland I anointed him and while I had my hands upon his head, I never had such unpleasant feelings in my life-and I said I never would again Anoint another person who had Negro blood in him. unless I was commanded by the Prophet to do so." LDS Council Meeting, 4 June 1879, Bennion Papers.

Questions,
1. Why did Joseph F. Smith say all this if Smith was supposedly said it was OK?
(ABEL did live a faithful Mormon life and died with the priesthood)

AND
LDS members are quick to bring up that Joseph Smith was not racist, and there was an early black man with the Mormon priesthood, etc, etc...
2. Had you heard of this about WHAT J.F. Smith did? claim to VOID Abel's priesthood?

The Mormons were no more or less racist than everyone else at the time.

I was 18 when the LDS "revelation" came that blacks could have the LDS priesthood. I was aware that a few had received it. I wondered why Joseph Smith would do this if God was leading his every action only to have it taken away later. It just didn't make sense then and it finally did once I stepped outside of Mormon information.

Here's the skinny on LDS/Mormon racism. It's rooted in a belief that some were more or less valiant in a Prue-existence. They believe that the seed of Cain is cursed. Here's a relatively modern LDS quote on that.

"Those who were LESS VALIANT IN PRE-EXISTENCE and who thereby had certain spiritual restrictions imposed upon them during mortality are known to us as the NEGROES." LDS "Apostle" Bruce R. McConkie, Mormon Doctrine, p. 527, 1966 edition (caps added for emphasis)

Here's more quotes from LDS leaders showing their deeply racists thinking. http://www.exmormon.org/blacks1.htm

Mormons should ask themselves, is the curse lifted now? Blacks being born now were valiant enough to hold the priesthood, but blacks prior to 1978 weren't? Was "the only true and living church upon the face of the whole earth, with which I, the Lord, am well pleased" really, no kidding acting under the direction of Jesus or were LDS leaders doctrinally confused and racially bigoted just thinking they were?

LDS racism runs deep and I'm glad they're trying to move in a new direction. But LDS leaders, if they have integrity and want this issue behind, will need to admit to the false doctrines and racial misunderstandings that caused these actions rather simply put out the edict and claim revelation.
