Is it possible to be a Mormon and be against racial intermarriage?
Don't bring up the teachings of the past with Brigham Young and all of that, I am talking about in the LDS church of today.. Is it okay to be against racial intermarriage and all of that?
@Cadisneygirl
Mixing races destroys them obviously. I think that preservation of race is noble.
"Racism" is believing that races exist and that one is superior to all the others. Where did I say that one race was superior to the others?
Sure why not? Whatever the spirit prompts you to think. It's even taught in the Spencer W. Kimball book.
?When I said you must teach your people to overcome their prejudices and accept the Indians, I did not mean that you would encourage intermarriage. I mean that they should be brothers, to worship together and to work together and to play together; but we must discourage intermarriage, not because it is sin. I would like to make this very emphatic. A couple has not committed sin if an Indian boy and a white girl are married, or vice verse. It USN?t a transgression like the transgressions of which many are guilty. But it is not expedient. Marriage statistics and our general experience convince us that marriage is not easy. It is difficult when all factors are favorable. The divorces increase constantly, even where the spouses have the same general background of race, religion, finances, education, and otherwise. ? (Spencer W. Kimball, ?The Teachings of Spencer W. Kimball,? p. 302)
If you look into the genealogy of Christ he had a Moabite in his line. As far as how some sects would view this fact may differ. If you are tied to one that holds a different perspective than your opinion you can conform by duty or find something else depending on how strict you old that particular piece of dogma. As far as a true Biblical belief goes it would seem in contradiction, Christ as an example.
It is possible, if you are a racist! Are some Mormons racists, sure.
As a mixed race Mormon I dint have a problem with it and thankfully all the Mormons I have met dint either!
The LDS church is NOT against interracial marriage, whatsoever. I would like to know what possible issue you could have to justify being against it and you cant use the fact that it can be hard to mix 2 cultures because you didn't say culture, you said race!
edit
wow Mr O
You sure proved yourself superior in all ways with your comments, eyes rolling
You believe that individual race is superior to mix race. That is a form of racism! You straight out said it is noble for someone to be of "pure" race. In other words it is superior to be a single race than to be mixed as if mixed race genes are suddenly inferior to the pure race genes. How is that not racist?
basically I am less noble because I am of mixed race and somehow my genes are a detriment to humanity because it is more noble to be pure
For those out there who may think that the Mormon Church has moved past Kimball?s negative view of interracial marriage, think again. To this day, it?s still quoting him. In the current, Church-authorized Aaronic Priesthood Manual 3, Lesson 31, entitled ?Choosing an Eternal Companion? (p. 127ff), it declares in black and white:
?We recommend that people marry those who are of the same racial background generally, and of somewhat the same economic and social and educational background (some of those are not an absolute necessity, but preferred), and above all, the same religious background, without question.? (Spencer W. Kimball, ?Marriage and Divorce,? in 1976 Devotional Speeches of the Year [Provo: Brigham Young University Press, 1977], p. 144)
Your idea of noble races places skin color way too high on the list of what's important. Why 'preserve' some bit of DNA at the expense of humanity, peace and individual freedom?
