It is a Christian restorations movement. It is based on the revelations, visions, and angelic visitation of Joseph Smith and others.
http://www.lds.org
http://www.mormon.org

Its real name is the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. They received the nickname of Mormons because they believe in the Book of Mormon. Joseph Smith was praying in his room one night when it filled with light. An angel appeared to him and told him about a book written by ancient prophets. He was shown in a vision where the book lay deposited in a stone box on a hill not far from his home. Eventually he was allowed to retrieve the book and translate it by the gift and power of God. Several people were allowed to see the book after it was translated. Three people in particular were called to witness to the world of its authenticity. They saw the Book of Mormon and the angel Moroni, and heard the voice of God declare the translation to be correct. They testified throughout their lives, and on their death beds of what they had seen.
Their testimony can be found in the preface of the Book of Mormon. A free Book of Mormon can be requested at WNW.mormon.org.
Here is a link to the testimony of the three witnesses:

If you are really interested in the beliefs of the LDS church you should
a) ask your friends to explain it fully
b) attend a service or two and take some pamphlets I know they have
c) read the Book of Mormon and the Doctrine and Covenants (only if you are really interested)
d) go on line and Google "Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints" and read up on what the various sites says

I live in Utah and know many Mormons. The consider themselves Christian, but have some different ideas about some things than 'mainstream' Christian sects.

It is quite similar, all Christian churches believe in Jesus Christ. The problem is that it is an incorrect name, the true Messiah is Yehowshuwa, and his father is Yehowah.

It's a denomination which recently has morphed into a large pro-homophobia advocacy group. They once believed Blacks were inferior and not welcome and that women were not equal. That has changed, but now the focus is on reviling law-abiding, taxpaying, gay Americans in spite of Christ's commandment that we must treat others as we want to be treated.

It is Christianity.
We read the Bible and follow the teachings of the church that Christ established on the Earth. The Book of Mormon is simply another account of his prophets and teaching of him. We believe that Joseph Smith restored CHRIST'S church upon the Earth. Not his own, not anyone Else's. The one that Christ established in the Bible. And we have high standards. So what?
I honestly cannot understand why we get such a bad rap. there are MUCH stranger religions out there.

We're quite Christian. Quite normal. I assure you.
This will answer any question you have.

p.s. "Mail Racer" (Jonah? angels? what??? Never heard those...) and the repeal prop 8 guy don't have a clue what they're talking about. Haters.
OHHH.. and Chris.. goodness. Now that's not very "Christian," is it? I wouldn't go out and say that about what you believe...

Mormonism is NOT Christian. Mormonism leads to eternal torment in hell. Here is why:

1) Mormonism rejects the truth that Jesus is God. So Mormonism has a different and fake "god" that cannot save anyone from hell.
2) Mormonism rejects the truth that the only way to get into heaven and to avoid being sent to hell, is by believing in Jesus alone for salvation.
3) Mormonism rejects the truth that only the BIBLE is the Word of God.

For these reasons, Mormonism leads to eternal torment in hell.

To be saved, a Mormon simply needs to believe the truth about Jesus, who is God and Savior from hell. In doing so, they will abandon Mormonism.

Jesus loves Mormons so very much, and Jesus wants them saved out of Mormon false doctrines and the Mormon false gospel that leads to eternal torment in hell (Galatians 1:6-9).

Jesus loves you so very much! True salvation is a FREE GIFT that happens in a split second when you believe in Jesus alone to save you! It is impossible to lose or "leave" salvation (John 6:39-40, 1 John 5:13).

The truth about Jesus is that the only way to be saved and to get into heaven and avoid being sent to eternal hell, is by believing in faith alone that Jesus, who is God, died for our sins on the cross as FULL PAYMENT for all our sins, and then Jesus rose from the dead (1 Corinthians 15:1-4). Believe this and you will be in heaven, no matter what!

Please pray now: "Jesus, please forgive me of my sins. I believe that You died on the cross for my sins and You rose from the dead. Thank You for eternal life!" You will be in heaven with Him forever when you die.

Yes we are Christians. We cent re our teachings around Jesus Christ. We may have the Book of Mormon but we believe that it is another testimony of Jesus Christ and it backs up what the Bible says. Look up WNW.mormon.org and WNW.lds.org and those two websites will give some information on what we believe in and whatever information you need to know about the Mormon church.

Wow! You picked up a truck load of prejudiced, anti-Mormon, critics. I'm being nice with those words.
Your question is quite broad and cannot be answered in a short sentence or two.
The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (Mormon to most people) is the restored Gospel of Jesus Christ as foretold in the New Testament. It is the fullness of Christianity in its purest form. We are founded upon apostles and prophets with Jesus Christ being the chief cornerstone. We are founded upon the rock of revelation as told to Peter, against which no force can prevail.
The conflict with "mainstream" Christianity is a matter of perspective. If you take a group of people and show them the same event from different points of view or perspectives, for instance an auto accident from different points in the intersection, you will get a wide variety of answers from them as to what they saw happen. This is very obvious when you collect testimony in a court case. The witnesses to the crime all tell the same story in a different way because they have different perspectives and interpretations on what they witnessed. So it is with the gospel and with the scriptures upon which the gospel is based. We read it and interpret it from our own perspectives and from the perspective of the persons that try to explain it to us. This is why we need prophets to give us the Lord's own will and interpretation. The Bible says that the scriptures are of no private interpretation. If so, then how are we to interpret them? By the spirit of the Holy Ghost. That is his function, to reveal truth to mankind, to testify of the Father and the Son. So it is, if people would open their minds to see the scriptures and the gospel from a slightly different perspective than what they are used to, they would see that the whole gospel puzzle does indeed fit together into a nice big picture.
I would recommend to you the Articles of Faith, written by Joseph Smith in answer to an editors question.
1 We believe in God, the Eternal Father, and in His Son, Jesus Christ, and in the Holy Ghost.
2 We believe that men will be punished for their own sins, and not for Adam?s transgression.
3 We believe that through the Atonement of Christ, all mankind may be saved, by obedience to the laws and ordinances of the Gospel.
4 We believe that the first principles and ordinances of the Gospel are: first, Faith in the Lord Jesus Christ; second, Repentance; third, Baptism by immersion for the remission of sins; fourth, Laying on of hands for the gift of the Holy Ghost.
5 We believe that a man must be called of God, by prophecy, and by the laying on of hands by those who are in authority, to preach the Gospel and administer in the ordinances thereof.
6 We believe in the same organization that existed in the Primitive Church, namely, apostles, prophets, pastors, teachers, evangelists, and so forth.
7 We believe in the gift of tongues, prophecy, revelation, visions, healing, interpretation of tongues, and so forth.
8 We believe the Bible to be the word of God as far as it is translated correctly; we also believe the Book of Mormon to be the word of God.
9 We believe all that God has revealed, all that He does now reveal, and we believe that He will yet reveal many great and important things pertaining to the Kingdom of God.
10 We believe in the literal gathering of Israel and in the restoration of the Ten Tribes; that Zion (the New Jerusalem) will be built upon the American continent; that Christ will reign personally upon the earth; and, that the earth will be renewed and receive its paradisaical glory.
11 We claim the privilege of worshiping Almighty God according to the dictates of our own conscience, and allow all men the same privilege, let them worship how, where, or what they may.
12 We believe in being subject to kings, presidents, rulers, and magistrates, in obeying, honoring, and sustaining the law.
13 We believe in being honest, true, chaste, benevolent, virtuous, and in doing good to all men; indeed, we may say that we follow the admonition of Paul?We believe all things, we hope all things, we have endured many things, and hope to be able to endure all things. If there is anything virtuous, lovely, or of good report or praiseworthy, we seek after these things.
Joseph Smith

"Mormons" are members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints.

They are Christians just like Baptists, Lutherans, Protestants, Methodists, Catholics, 7Th Day's, JW's, etc. None of these two groups have identical beliefs, but they are all Christians.

LDS doctrines are distinct from the others in that:
-They believe that Christ's original church disappeared from the earth after the death of the apostles (aka the apostasy)
-They believe that Jesus Christ himself restored his church to the earth about 180 years ago through a man who was called, by God, to be a prophet: Joseph Smith
-They believe that God gave us additional scripture through prophets. They do believe the Bible is God's word.
-They believe that their church is led by Jesus Christ himself through a modern day prophet. The prophet today is Thomas S. Monson.
-They are non-Trinidadians.

"Christianity" is not a church, but rather a belief system. This is like asking "Is a Toyota Corolla just like a car"???

You can get more info at:
LDS.org
Mormon.org

Ignore all the ridiculous answers please.

It's the restored gospel of Jesus Christ.
We think we're Christian because we believe that Jesus Christ is the Son of God, the savior of the world, and the Lord Jehovah, and that he created the world under the direction of his father.

Mormonism is a Restoration of Christianity. It's Christianity in its foulness with the power, gifts, ordinances, and knowledge as taught by the Lord through Divine Revelation.
