All I'm getting on line is use of the term, where the term comes from, and lots of the following;
"Mormons, are followers of Mormonism, which is the largest branch of the Latter Day Saint movement, and their faith was called Mormonism. Mormonism is The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS Church), which is the largest denomination of the Latter Day Saint movement. Mormonism also includes Mormon fundamentalism, who are Mormons, who follow Mormonism, and follow Mormon faith. Mormon. Mormon. MOOOORMON" which tells me nothing.
Can someone just tell me what they believe and what sets them aside from other faiths. Thanks
It is a cult their leader was John Smith if I remember right. He rewrote the Bible to suit himself and called it the book of Mormon. It is the one linked to the word 'monies' who were extremely active in drawing young people into their cult in the 1970's, particularly in the USA but also had a good go in the UK too, causing all sorts of problems. Mass weddings are another feature. Beware of two men in black suits with huge black 'bibles' knocking at your door, more dangerous than Jehovah Witnesses - well just!! The men targeted young girls (I know this from experience). They tried to con you into thinking they were Christians but we rent with their one world, non-denominational philosophy. Im sure if you look under the word CULTS you will find lots of stuff.
Go to Mormon.org or lads.org to find out what we believe. Our beliefs are quite a list but to sum it up just look up the 13 articles of faith. Don't listen to what the anti-'s say about our beliefs.
We believe in God the Eternal Father, in His son Jesus Christ, and in the Holy Ghost.
The Bible and Book of Mormon are the word of God. People want to use Rev.22:18-19 but they do not actually read, they just see "do not add". Those verses actually say "do not add to this book of prophecy" and "do not take away from the prophecy of this book". The key words are "the" and "this". Rev.22:18-19 talk specifically about Revelation, not the entire Bible. Revelation was written before other books of the New Testament so by other people's logic they would be calling other books of the New Testament false since they were written afterward.
We believe in a modern-day living prophet just as the Bible teaches there are to be. As the Bible says, not word for word, a generation with no vision is doomed. The ones that sees the visions and receives revelations directly from the Lord are His prophets.
We try to teach others the gospel of Jesus Christ and invite them to come unto Him and we pray they accept Him as Lord and Savior.
The Church Of JESUS CHRIST Of Latter Day Saints, is Jesus Christ's true Church here on Earth today. This can be pr oven by reading The Book Of Mormon, The Second Witness of Jesus Christ. Additionally this can be pr oven by having LDS Missionaries over to your house, then you can feel the spirit of God radiating from them as you speak to them.
Further proof can obtained by Praying to God with real intent, and receiving a witness from the still small voice, that THE Church Of JESUS CHRIST Of Latter Day Saint is the true Church of Jesus Christ on Earth in this dispensation.
More proof of this truth, can be obtained by going to an LDS Church in your area. There you will again feel the spirit of God.
The same way that people knew Jesus was the Christ during His time here on Earth, is the same way you will know His true and Holy Church. The people who knew Jesus was the Christ, knew because they felt it in every cell in their body. And then they trusted that feeling, and followed Jesus Christ's commandments, for eternity.
Most did not believe in Jesus Christ when He was here on Earth, because they refused to repent of their sins, and because they refused to listen to the still small voice.
The Spirit Of God will lead you to all that is good, it always has and it always will.
I believe that Jesus Christ is my Lord and Savior. And I believe if I do all that I can do, then Jesus Christ will save me in his Kingdom.
Hi Jay Jay, can I point you to a site called WNW.hotm.tv where you can see loads of topics on the subject of Mormonism.
Brief History - founded in the 1830's by a man called Joseph Smith Jr who claimed to see a vision years previously of God The Father and Jesus Christ who told him not to join any Church because they were all wrong and their creeds were wrong and the leaders corrupt.
He was to start his own Church and was given golden plates by an angel called Moroni which told the story of the early settlers who came to America from Israel after the Babylonian Invasion and how Jesus visited them after his resurrection in 33AD.
This became the Book of Mormon. Joseph Smith later added two other books, The Doctorin & Covenants and The Pearl of Great Price. The use the King James Bible but accept it insofar as it is translated correctly. The other 3 books they accept as The Word of God - Unquestioned!
Key beliefs can be found on the LDS website, but you are right, some Mormons do have practices that the LDS Church do not sanction now.
But in short: They believe that they are the ONLY true Church on the face of the Earth.
Joseph Smith is a prophet of God
That God was once a man who by obedience to the laws and ordinances of the Mormon gospel, gain exultation and became a god himself.
That mankind may be saved by obedience to the laws and ordinances of The Gospel (Mormon gospel)
The Father God is one of many gods and all mankind had a preexistence in Heaven with him. Jesus and Lucifer are brothers, as we were in the preexistence and we are working our way back to be with God in Heaven.
There are also 3 heavens depending how good you have been.
and they practise baptism for the dead, for those who have not heard of the gospel so they can choose in the spirit realm.
They do a lot of good works and look after their members very well with excellent social pro grammes and fellowship support. They present the perfect church claiming to be Christian.
However, from a Christian perspective: it goes against everything as revealed about God in the Bible. They have a different Jesus, not the one who Created ALL THINGS as the Bible says. In spite of their claims, there is no historical evidence to support the BOM. They use Christian terms but have different meanings to them. They do not believe in Salvation by Grace alone but by Works. The Bible does not teach baptism for the dead. and they aim to convert Christians to the LDS Church along with every one else. But a big issue is that Christianinty is Monothiestic, believing in One God only. Mormonism is polythiestic believeing in many gods and that man may become gods themselves. That is Not Christian Theology!
Take a look at the sources below.
As an after thought, I should add that once again that you if, and there is, people marking this as a bad answer. As I said, go to the LDS website and check out their beliefs, but check out the sources I cite below also. See if anything I have said above is untrue. As a religion it's great. Moral, up right, good for society. But what they teach is Mormon Theology and not Christian Theology, yet they calim to be Christian!
We believe in Jesus Christ, the son of God, as our savior and redeemer from sin and its consequences. We believe every single thing that he said in the Bible, and everything that the Bible says about him. We take him at his word when he said that God taught him and sent him, that he is Jehovah -- not God, but the son of God.
We believe that (in accordance with Revelation 14:6 and many other scriptures) Jesus has restored the everlasting gospel in the last days so that it can be preached in all the world. We look forward to all the other sacred prophecies about him being fulfilled, too. We believe that The Book of Mormon is also an important witness of truth that supports, clarifies, and defends the Bible against its detractors. We are the closest of all the Christian denominations to Jesus' original Christianity in our teachings, structure, and authority.
All churches have truth in them; all of them can help one escape hell. But there are more than two rewards mentioned in the New Testament. We just have something beautiful, even vital, to share. We do not aim to destroy any body's faith, but to complete and perfect it, since Jesus is "the author and finisher of our faith."
1) Jesus Christ is our Savior
2) the true church of Jesus Christ kind of dissolved after Jesus died and his teachings were changed or interpreted differently, and because of that it needed to be restored
3) this restoration was done by Joseph Smith in 1830, who was called to be a prophet just like Moses or Noah
4) we have had a prophet at the head of the church ever since Joseph Smith, and we have one today
5) when the church was restored, the priesthood (the authority from God to perform baptism and other ordinances) was restored. It is only found in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints today.
To learn more, go to WNW.mormon.org and click on the "our beliefs" tab at the top of the page. Good luck!
Very simply. You need a history of the word "Mormon"
The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints was founded in 1830 by a prophet named Joseph Smith, after God the Father & Jesus Christ appeared to him. We believe it was a restoration of the original Church as started by Jesus Christ himself, which had ended when the apostles were all killed.
We believe that the Bible is "A" book of scripture, the most important but not the only book. Other prophets existed who wrote their own records and testimonies of the gospel of Jesus Christ. One of these was the "Book of Mormon", a 1000 year record of some of the inhabitants of ancient America. Joseph Smith was inspired to translate the book in to English. The prophet who originally abridged and compiled the book was named Mormon.
Because our church is the only Christian church who uses this book, we were nicknamed "Mormons" by everyone else, it kinda stuck. Our church is still usually still called "Mormons" though the term can unfortunately apply to any of the small groups who broke off from us and kept a few of the traditions from our history.
If you want a list of our basic doctrines, the best one is the "Articles of Faith" written by Joseph Smith. http://lds.org/library/display/0,4945,106-1-2-1,FF.html
It's only basic, but I'd be happy to direct you to anything else you want to know about.
