Default Former Mormon Prophet Gordon B. Hinckley said Mormons worship a "different Jesus"?

What does he mean by that?

It's actually quite simple. Gordon B. Hinckley was stating that we worship the Jesus Christ of scripture and others worship the many versions of Jesus Christ traditional beliefs has created.

I've never heard, nor seen him say or be quoted to say that.

You'll have to cite where you got that misinformation from to put that into context. It could possibly be he said that - but it wasn't to imply we have more than one version of a Jesus Christ or a belief in worshiping a plurality of gods.

I've heard MANY leadership of the church respond to other faith's questions when they assume / imply that Mormons believe in a "different Jesus."

Our leadership has said that they believe in the ONE and only Jesus Christ. The son of the Eternal father and the Savior of the world. They've called him the Messiah, the great Redeemer and the Living Christ. He was the one that was crucified and resurrected.

Here's various leadership making an official video on WHO is Jesus Christ.

Other faiths claim that Mormons have a "different Jesus."

We believe Jesus is the Son of God, not God himself.
We believe that God is the creator of mankind, therefore making Jesus Christ our spiritual brother - and we all spirit children of God.
We believe that Jesus Christ is the one who atoned for our sins and will be our advocate to the Father.

If this is different, when compared to other Christian faiths - then it's different. We believe that our doctrine is more aligned to the gospel that Christ taught when he was on the earth.

(But then, every church believes that - making everyone version of Jesus "different.")

But we know there is only ONE Christ.

GBH, responding to a question whether the LDS believe in the ?traditional Christ,? stated:
"No I don't. The traditional Christ of whom they speak is not the Christ of whom I speak. For the Christ of whom I speak has been revealed in this the dispensation of the fullness of times."

he is referring to the concept of Christ that has developed in the centuries since the Nicene creed was formed --- he is saying that we do not believe in the added non-biblical creeds.
the LDS do not have some of the same beliefs about Christ that other christian churches do.

what GBH is NOT saying - he is not saying that we do not believe in the biblical Christ. in fact, the reason that we do not accept these creeds is because they are non-biblical. and GBH continued (with words usually omitted by critics)
"Am I Christian? Of course I am. I believe in Christ. I talk of Christ. I pray through Christ. I'm trying to follow Him and live His gospel in my life."

here is some more of what GBH has said......
"Believe in Jesus Christ, the Son of God, the greatest figure of time and eternity. Believe that His matchless life reached back before the world was formed. Believe that He was the Creator of the earth on which we live. Believe that He was Jehovah of the Old Testament, that He was the Messiah of the New Testament, that He died and was resurrected, that He visited the western continents and taught the people here, that He ushered in this final gospel dispensation, and that He lives, the living Son of the living God, our Savior and our Redeemer."

as you can see from this statement - there is no question that GBH is professing belief in the Jesus Christ of the NT.

LDS worship, well not really worship because they don't. They don't believe in the Jesus of the bible. They believe in the Jesus that is stamped on the outside of their building. Very different, one of the reasons they aren't Christian.

He was responding to allegations made that Mormon's worship a Jesus different than that lay ed out by Christians in General. And unfortunately it is a talk often misquoted by anti-Mormons to say exactly the opposite of what president Hinckley said. If you read the talk, president Hinckley describes Jesus using the New Testament and compares it with the Mormon view of Jesus to conclude that the Mormon Jesus IS the historical Jesus described in the New Testament.

To use this talk in support of the idea that the Mormon Jesus is different than any other Jesus is also to support the idea that the Mormon Jesus is the Jesus of the New Testament. Yes President Hinckley did say we believe in "a different Jesus" and so does any Christian who still adheres to the New Testament.

As a side note, former suggests that he was removed or something, it would be better to refer to him as the Late Gordon B. Hinckley.

he is expressing the typical Mormon arrogance that they know more than you about all things Jesus. in other words, you think you know Jesus, well they know him better, because they are tighter with Jesus than you are.

The true Jesus is God. The Mormon Jesus is the brother of Satan and is not God.

The Mormon Jesus is the one that suffered for their sins in the Garden and not on the Cross, even their Adam and eve is different as they have no original sin and HAD to eat the fruit in order to progress so they even change Genesis and there for this makes their Savior totally different.
YOU CHANGE THE BEGINNING (of GENSSI) YOU CHANGE THE END (THE CROSS)!
