Default Are there any Mormons here who became atheists?

Were you ex-communicated?

LDS need prayers, for example, that they may know spiritual truths.

I have an Atheist friend who was raised Mormon.
And no, he wasn't excommunicated.
I believe in fact, the LDS church still has him as a member on file.

yea. my ex....and nope. not excommunicated, but then he never really said much about his loss of belief to anybody.

excommunications usually entail some sort of being brought to the awareness of the local leaders. he never did that.

Yes. About 100,000 people a year take the trouble to officially resign. Many more just stop going. Most drift into atheism in my experience.

Once you've seen how easily Joseph Smith could Miss lead people, it's hard to take any religion seriously.

There aren't that many excommunications for simple apostasy. That is usually for something that embarrasses the church.

I personally know many ex-Mormons who eventually admitted they were atheists. (Most Mormons would say they always were, but that's not the case.) One in particular was once a devoted and beloved bishop. Not all were exclaimed. Most just stopped attending, never bothering to submit letters of resignation. One replied why bother to resign from a fictional organization? The LDS churns out either atheists or people who eventually find the Lord. No one leaves the LDS society orbit without having a crisis of faith.

For interesting insight into both sides, the first site listed below is the most interesting. The second one was developed by an ex-Mormons atheist. Both can be a bit racy at times, so beware. (Unfortunately, saying that is like waving a red bandanna in front of our prize bull, Mr. Smith, but it can't be helped. People need to be informed.)

I am an Atheist ex-Mormon and I left while I was in good standing with the LDS church.

I'm still on the records, and I just told the bishop I don't believe it anymore. He was understanding and he just left it at that. Some bishops try to excommunicate Atheist members, but they have no authority over anyone at all legally. If someone would try to ex-communicate me, I would just laugh and slowly close my front door/hang up the phone.

Yes, I was an atheist for some time until I got saved. I was military and it was hard for the church to keep up with me moving all over the place.. so no I never got excommunicated. I told the Elders I was ex-Mormon Atheist, they just harassed me with visits. My parents just ostracized me.

Became Agnostic. Meaning I think there are things that are beyond our understanding. But I know that all religion is man made. I was born and raised in the Mormon faith. But never excommunicated. Just realized that the LDS church has no more jurisdiction over me than the god they preach does.
