Default What are some examples of strictly philosophical objections to Mormonism?

I'm not looking for theological disagreements or moral objections.

I can think of a few philosophical objections to monotheistic religions, such as the exemption of God from the problem of first cause, or the impossibility of omnipotence and omniscient free-will; but I find it difficult to object to a sort of 'god of the gaps' religion which sneakily claims that the creation story is a creation within an existence and that no single god (among others) is Omani-anything since there are many gods with there very own creations within a larger (mysterious) existence.

I'm already aware of several moral and scientific objections. Do you have any philosophical objections that you can share with me?

(I'm not sure whether to categorize this question under religion or philosophy...)

Well there are slight inconsistencies, such as most Mormons deny the existence of the mother Goddess, yet say you can't become a God if you are not married.

The belief in demo-gods or non-omnipotent gods is basic polytheism with the inherent issues of eternal recurrence and the snafus of dualism: the net (the force between opposing sides) becomes God and is either the one true God or gods are merely powerful beings and we are back to an atheist world view. Either way worshiping demo-gods is basically Satanism. Thou shalt have no gods before me, even the net.

I personally have no problems with an omnipotent God because I have seen through the silly notions of free will and evil. I could not accept the Mormon notions because I see them as idolaters.

Hiram, you probably put forth the best argument for that I've ever heard on this type of topic. It's rare to find a religious discussion based in reason and facts instead of speculation and bashing anything you don't believe in. While I don't agree with everything you said, I do appreciate that you looked at it from a logical point of view instead of just listing everything you don't like about them or everything one of them has ever done to you.

+2 for Hiram

As usual Happy is clueless as is the ask er, there can be no philosophical objection to religion, each is unto its own. They do not call themselves Mormons, which suggests that the facts in this discussion are incidental to the ignorance of the ask er. Happy's argument, no matter how articulate lacks merit, because it is factually incorrect. What I see is an intellectual discussion based on ignorance, this I can have a philosophical objection to, one precludes the other. I am not a Latter Day Saint nor do I aspire to be, but I have had 16 sets of missionaries to my home to discuss their religion, and have attended services at their churches. (several different ones) I have done the same with many religions. I can say this with certainty, the Latter Day Saints are one of the kindest groups I've dealt with and are responsible members of their communities. Philosophically, They are who they say they are, nothing more and nothing less, if you cannot find god here then move along.
