Could someone tell me what a mormon is pretty urgent?
I'm curious a friend wants me to join her in a Mormon church and before i go i was wondering what a Mormon is i know it's a branch of Christianity but i need more detail
A guy claimed he spoke with an angel. And claimed to have stone tablets from god. He refused to show anybody and eventually the stone tablets went to heaven. So all of his claims were never pr oven and even invented a story to explain why nobody will have any evading for his claims.
Don't go to this church as they aren't Christian. They aren't following the traditional Christian ways and use their own book the Book of Mormon plus the Bible. The traditional Christian message is ... you need to know God, your spiritual Father, then pray about your life. He can help you live a better life. As God is love, life is primarily about love and relationships in order to have a rich and full life. Also, you need to know God's Son, Jesus Christ, in your life as your Lord and Savior as Jesus died on the cross as payment for our sins. Having Him with you will give you God's blessing and forgiveness, as you live God's way. We need to know and follow God in this life so we can go to heaven after we die, and so we can get God's help now. Not following God leads to hell, eternal suffering. Instead, there is an important prayer to pray to become a born again Christian. This prayer should be said with faith in God and a sincere heart:
"Dear God, I know that I am a sinful person and I don't want to be like this anymore. I know that Jesus Christ died on the cross as payment for our sins, and I want to accept Jesus Christ into my life as my Lord and Savior forever so I can receive God's forgiveness, guidance, and go to heaven after I die. Thank you, dear God, for your mercy and guidance; in Jesus' name. Amen."
After saying this prayer, you should check out a Christian church like Baptist, Catholic, Lutheran.
Also, get into their Bible study group so you can learn more about God, Jesus, and God's will for your life. The Bible is God's instruction book about how to live a God-honoring life so you can go to heaven after you die. The church can also get you baptized and prayed for. You can pray for yourself daily too. God guide your life.
Go to church with her, what are you afraid of? The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints (Mormons) is a Christian church. It does have some different beliefs than mainstream Christianity, but that doesn't make it bad. The people are very nice and if you don't like it you DOT have to keep on going. But I think you should be open to new ideas and try going to church with her at least once. You received a lot of anti Mormon answers on here, well I guarantee most of them are just going by rumors they heard. Good luck and have fun at church. It is a learning experience to learn about other people if nothing else. =)
Also, can to think of a better way to figure out who Mormons are than going to church with them? I think it's a good idea.
A Mormon is a member of THE Church Of JESUS CHRIST Of Latter Day Saints.
Jesus Christ is the Savior of Mankind. Mormons worship Jesus Christ completely without reservations, even to the point there is criticism by others who call themselves Christians.
Can anyone worship Jesus Christ too much? According to Anti-Mormons, apparently so.
You will find out more when you go to Church.
Additionally you can ask your friend, and I am sure, that they will tell you more.
Visiting is going to be very easy and relaxing.
Nothing to stress about. It's just a church service.
They have an opening song and prayer.
They have sacrament for those who are members. (You just pass the tray along without partaking)
There are usually some visitors every week, you won't be the only one.
Then they have speakers who are just people who are in that ward (church area) and there is no paid clergy.
Then there is a closing song and prayer.
That's sacrament meeting.
These are the nicest, honest, sincerest clean living people that you will meet.
If you want to hear a typical talk/sermon just go onto lads.org and they have video of lots of talks given in "general conference" on any topic you can think of.
Any specific questions, you can feel free to email : )
P.S. Don't listen to the nay Sayers who think that they know what we are or aren't. Jesus was hated by the religious remember and was believed to be of the devil. That was the assessment from the popular sects of his day.
No its not. It's a cult. It's not Christianity, because their god is a man. Not God, who is Spirit, like He says He is. But some yahoo with a body, a wife and kids, and makes people who won't participate in some ridiculous spiritual war over humanity "cursed" with black skin (Africans). Then, of all things, they turn around and deny these things!
Here's a short history of Mormonism's basis. It's in cartoon form. Short and sweet. Hope it helps you realize its not anywhere near Christianity.

Mormons are a cult that turned mainstream over the years.
It started out in 1830 when some gold digger (what they called con artists back then) supposedly saw god and Jesus. They told him all religions are wrong and then told him to start a new one.
An angel came to him and told him to dig up some golden plates that were written in some weird form of Egyptian. No one ever saw the plates though besides himself and a couple of close friends. The angel took them afterward, too, so they are no longer around.
They used to practice polygamy until 1890, but they stopped. They also forbid blacks from having any leadership positions until 1978.
Go if you'd like to see what it's about, but I would decline any invitation to talk to missionaries. Most Mormons are decent people but the religion itself has extreme problems.
Do you trust your friend? Then why not go with her and see what it is all about. You don't have to join the minute you walk in the door. Go and see for yourself what it is all about.
You will find some of the kindest and most sincere people in the world in the Mormon church. They serve for free, they are not paid for their service. This includes the Bishop who is over the ward (a congregation) which usually consists of 100 -300 people, all of his councilors, the Stake President who is over approximately 10 wards, his councilors, all of the people who serve in the various groups within the church. None of them are paid. Why do they serve? Because they have a strong belief that the Mormon church Is Christ's church and that when they serve they are serving their God.
Jesus Christ said that... "ye shall know them by their fruits." Meaning that you can judge someone, weather they are good or evil by what they produce, what kind of person they are themselves. Well, I challenge you to go to a Mormon church and judge for yourself if the majority of people there are not trying to be like their Savior Jesus Christ. Are they trying to life Christ-like lives? Then you can judge for yourself!
Their are several here that have answered your question that are trolls and answer every question about Mormons that they can and do it in a negative way. They do it for their own agenda and search for questions dealing with Mormon's for one purpose, to put it down. Do you want to listen to someone that is obviously so anti-Mormon that they would go out of their way every day to put it down?
Find out and judge for yourself. You don't have to join to just attend one of our Sacrament meetings or other activities. Why not go and judge for yourself?
Mormons are nice people, but they haven't received the salvation that Jesus gives to all his disciples ...
While they correctly say that one must receive the Holy Spirit to be saved, they teach that one can only receive the gift of the Spirit by the laying on of their hands following baptism. Does the bible teach this?
**Truth must fit the scriptures!**
There are 4 examples of people receiving the Holy Spirit in Acts:-
(1) Acts 2
All the disciples (120, see Acts 1:15) receive the Holy Spirit without the laying on of hands, and are known to have received by the miraculous sign of speaking in tongues (v4). Peter identifies this as receiving the promised Holy Spirit (v33) and the same gift is to all who God shall call (v39).
(2) Acts 8:12-18
Philip (who was there in Acts 2) is alone in the city of Samaria where many people believe. He sends for Peter & John who ?prayed for them, that they might receive the Holy Ghost?.
They lay hands on the people and when they receive something else is seen to make it known that the Spirit is received.
(3) Acts 10
The Gentiles receive the gift without the laying on of hands, and before baptism:-
"While Peter yet spake these words . . . on the Gentiles also was poured out the gift of the Holy Ghost . . .Then answered Peter, Can any man forbid water, that these should not be baptized, which have received the Holy Ghost as well as we?"(v45-47)
In Acts 11 Peter further explains:-
?as I began to speak, the Holy Ghost fell on them, as on us at the beginning (Acts 2) . . . God gave them the like gift as he did unto us . . .? (Viv14-16)
(4) Acts 19
?When they heard this, they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus.
And when Paul had laid his hands upon them, the Holy Ghost came on them; and they spake with tongues, and prophesied.? (v5-6)
So, after baptism Paul knows they still Haven?t received the Spirit, so he lays hands on them, and when they speak in tongues he knows they have.
Unless someone can explain the above inconsistencies with their teaching I will have to conclude that they done the same as other religious organizations by replacing God's sign of speaking in tongues with a doctrine of men. So, Mormons haven't actually received the Spirit at all! (and so are not actually Christian! See Romans 8:9).
Conclusion: Laying on of hands is used to encourage people to receive the Spirit but it is not a requirement. Speaking in tongues was taken as God?s sign of receiving His Spirit.
