As a group, Mormons are not more racist than any other group. They may be less racist. Heck, allot of black people are racist.
It is true that the blacks were not given the priests hood in earlier days. When I joined the church in 1974, it was common knowledge that the blacks would receive the priesthood at some later time.
Mormons believe that we all were spirit children of God before we were born. Mormons believe one third of God's children rebelled and followed Satan. They will never be able to come to earth. All people who were born were among the two thirds that did not re bell.
"And the great dragon was cast out, that old serpent, called the Devil, and Satan, which deceiver the whole world: he was cast out into the earth, and his angels were cast out with him" (Revelation 12:9).
"And his tail drew the third part of the stars of heaven, and did cast them to the earth" (Revelation 12:4).
There is speculation of why the blacks could not hold the priesthood but there is no official word. We do know that lineage is very important, For example, the house of Israel is the chosen race. The gospel was not preached to the gentiles until Peter received a revelation commanding to do so. In the days of Moses, only the tribe of Levi could hold the priesthood.
We are all born into differing circumstances, some rich, some poor, etc. This is no indication that God loves some of his children less but that he treats them differently depending upon his knowledge of what each individual needs, We are all special to God.
Here is a scripture from the Book of Mormon:
"and he inviteThhem all to come unto him and partake of his goodness; and he denieth none that come unto him, black and white, bond and free, male and female; and he remembereth the heathen; and all are alike unto God, both Jew and Gentile" (2nd Nephi 26:33).
