While I am not a Mennonite, I DO attend a Mennonite church several times a month. By the way, I am in Colorado, not back east so I don't come into contact with the Amish very often, just Mennonites.
After attending church with them for a couple of years now, I have found that:
1. They are true brothers and sisters in Christ. They are not a cult or a hide-away group.
2. They are conservative. This means that they follow the Bible as strictly and literally as possible, even if it clashes against modern or cultural ideas.
3. They attempt to live a holy lifestyle. This means that they go above and beyond what many Christians do in order to live for Christ instead of themselves.
4. They are mission and ministry minded. They serve the people around them and are involved in outreaches, missionary activities, and local community programs.
5. They show the LOVE of God. A couple friends of mine thought that because of the way they dress, they HAD to be holier-than-thou. So, they spiked their hair with pink highlights, wore fishnet stocking shirts, chains, and black eyeshadow and nail polish - just to shock them and make them cringe. They were welcomed in with open arms and shown the love of Jesus. They felt so loved and welcome there that the next week they went back, but this time without the shock-factor.
People's biggest problem with them is not what God they serve, but how conservative they are in serving Him.
