Protestantism is simply a rejection, a protest, of the authority of the Catholic Church. Interestingly this didn't happen until about 1520 with Martin Luther, so for a thousand and half years before, there was only one Christian Church in existence: the Roman Catholic Church.
Protestants are our brothers and sisters. I don't usually try to compare and explain the differences in doctrines because in Protestantism, there's just too many. The denominations are many, as well as the doctrines, and continue to split and divide to this day.
Catholicism is far, far easier. All you have to do is pick up a catechism and you'll have everything the Church believes right in your hands.
Hope this helps. God bless.
