Paul's letter to the Romans, (first chapter) if read carefully, will provide adequate answers to your question, however, I would like to shed some historical light upon Christianity which few catholics really know:
firstly, it was something that came out of battles, bloodshed and treaties. it is about 1,000 years old.
Secondly, catholics claim that the apostle Peter was the first 'pope', however, this is not historically or scripturalLyossible. Simon, one of the fishermen who followed Jesus, answered the question of Jesus which was, 'whom do men say that I am?' Simon's answer, 'Thou art the Christ, (messiah)' and to which Jesus replied, 'this was not revealed to you by man, but by the Holy Spirit Himself. You are Petros, (stone) and upon this rock (of Truth), I will build my church'. Jesus is the Rock, and this is a metaphor that all Jews knew since the time that the rock was struck in the wilderness for water after leaving Egypt.
But the Truth of Him being the Messiah is what Jesus' New Covenant is based on.
the New Covenant is the product of the karigma (Greek for New Declaration, a decree, a treaty, a covenant) of the gospel. The New Covenant between God and man is now through Jesus, purchased by His blood.
this covenant is not based on the law (Torah) anymore because Jesus' name means law. (In Hebrew this name has so many wonderful meanings, it is good to study). It is not based on the purchase price of bulls, goats or lambs, but by the Lamb of God. It is not based on the tithe, the temple or the priest because Jesus is now our only High priest, (read Hebrews' letter).
One thousand years ago, after the death of Christ, catholics and their papacies (some of which were so sinful with many adulterous affairs and murders) rose up and settled in Rome, after disputing what city was 'chosen by God'. (the other city is now Istanbul in Turkey, the seat of the orthodox rite), and prior to that, it was in Africa, in Carthage, then Hippo and even Egpyt (the place where the Coptic christians have been living for 2,000 years or so).
Protestants (a misnomer today because no one is protesting the abuses of many wolves who have been in the midst since before Jude wrote his letter in the new Testament) are not guaranteed to an after life in heaven either. Paul wrote to Timothy: even the devils believe. James wrote, "this is true religion: taking care of the widows, the orphans, those in distress and sickness".
Only those who are the living dwelling place of the Most High, with hearts consecrated to Him, living the life of Romans 6:6 and Galatians 2;20 will be rewarded in heaven. (of which there are at least 7 levels...).
Paul also wrote to Timothy: study to show yourself approved of God.
Yet, the catholics prevented many from even studying the Bible (until very recently) so this precluded many from even knowing the very foundations of the faith. But God does not hold them responsible, according to what is written in Paul's letter to the Romans.
Jesus said that a bad tree can't produce good fruit and a good tree can't produce bad fruit so if the Roman Catholics are a bad tree then so is protestantism as they are the fruit of the Roman Catholic Church. Alternatively, if the Protestants are bad then that means so is the Roman Catholics. So either they are both good or they are both bad.
However if we consider the Churches that were founded before the Church in Rome such as Antioch and Alexandria (today called the Syrian and Coptic Orthodox Churches) still hold and practice the same original faith as did the apostolic Church in the beginning. Whereas neither the Roman Catholics or Protestants do as they have both changed, removed or added as they see fit the original faith and practices of Christianity in varying ways.
That being said, and easily confirmed, then it's a fair bet they are both bad.

Your error is thinking that "Catholicism is the first Christians". I will debunk that error.
Catholicism is not Christian. Catholicism cannot get anyone into heaven, because Catholicism teaches works for salvation, and that is a false gospel of works (Galatians 1:6-9) that is against JESUS'S free gift of salvation!
And Catholicism will not give you a PERSONAL RELATIONSHIP with Jesus, which is what JESUS wants with you!
So, you need to get away from Catholicism, and instead, to believe in JESUS for His free gift of eternal life in heaven! John 3:16! !
It's clear from the Book of Acts in the Bible that catholics didn't even exist during the days of Acts. And the SEVEN CHURCHES in Revelation, all of which existed before 100 AD, NONE of them are catholic! Catholicism didn't exist for over 300 years after Jesus. And Catholicism didn't exist for over 200 years after the Bible was complete and compiled. Those in the Book of Acts are the first Christians, and they believed what would be called fundamentalist doctrine today. ANYONE can read the Book of Acts for themselves and see. Had Catholicism existed during the time of Acts, the first Christians would have rejected Catholicism completely.
Also there's TONS of Christians who also completely rejected Catholicism, long before Martin Luther was even born. Catholicism murdered millions and millions of Christians. :*(
So not only is it wrong for anyone to say that "catholics were the first Christians", but this blows away the catholic claim that "no churches existed other than the catholic church, until Martin Luther".
Every "pope" is a false prophet. And there is no "pope" in the Bible.
There were ALWAYS saved believers outside the catholic cult, who knew Catholicism cannot save anyone.
Catholicism cannot save. Only believing in Jesus for His free gift of salvation, is what saves!

Believe in Jesus for His free gift of salvation, and you will be in heaven, no matter what!
Salvation is a FREE GIFT that happens in a split second when you believe in JESUS for His free gift of salvation! It is impossible to lose or "leave" salvation (John 6:39-40, John 10:28, 1 John 5:13).

yes, and those "Christians" that got fed to the lions, like the ones who followed them into the 2ND century and 3rd and 4Th and 5Th and on and on, were mostly martyred for the faith, and others were saints like Saint Patrick, Saint Francis, and thousands more, when there were NO Protestants even on the radar screen, they were non existent, and not until 1547 years after the birth of the roman catholic church, did they show up due to martin Luther and john Calvin. Gees, how anyone could fall for that one is amazing to me, after all, if Jesus promised that the gates of hell will not prevail, how could anyone doubt our Lord's divine words? Sinful , corrupt men, could never ever corrupt the church that was founded (built) by Jesus Christ. He's waiting there for all His children who are out on rafts, and little boats, to come aboard the ship---the catholic church.
