Most of their beliefs have stemmed from the same basic ideas. Protestants came into being as a reaction against a lot of corruption from the high priests and other members of the clergy, as before there was separation of church and state, the church was the state, and, therefore, had a lot of power. Other than reacting against things like indulgences ("get out of hell free" cards that were sold by the church to give people "clean slates" for sins), Protestants didn't agree with the Catholic church's use of elaborate decorations and relics. They argued that a church should be simple and clean. I also believe that Protestants do not believe in transubstantiation--that the Eucharist actually becomes the body and blood of Christ--whereas Catholics do.

Obviously, the first difference is the pope.
That is the most major difference.
Beyond that, I think that protestants take the Book of Revelations a bit more serious, then do the Catholics.
We all believe that Jesus is the Christ. We all believe He is the Savior. We believe in the trinity, and that Jesus was crucified, died, was buried, and rose again from the dead.
Our differences are insignificant when compared to our common beliefs.
