Why? For the same reason that Catholicism has so many.

Because each of the denominations have their own worship style and believe in rituals of their church a little differently. Baptism, and other fundamental beliefs of the protestant church differ slightly from one church to another. For example, the Church of Christ believes that instruments of any kind are not to be used in worship because the New Testament didn't say that they COULD use them. So they interpret that differently, while another protestant church feels that using a piano or organ no way interferes with the Bible's stance on using music. In the Old Testament God encouraged it. If it weren't allowed in the New Testament he would have specifically said so, which he didn't. These are just one example of how a worship style can differ from another church.

The simple answer is because there isn't one Protestant Church and hierarchy, unlike the Catholic Church that has one body and a head, the Pope. Protestantism didn't come up as a single wave and form a new Church. It was in fact a series of different movements. Starting with Martin Luther's challenge to the Church and notion of "Sola Scriptura", "Only Scripture". Then over movements like that of Menno Simmons, Kalvin, Henry the VIII, and other movements inspired by different causes.

In short, the two main reasons are that there was no one united Protestant Movement, but a series of smaller scale reforms that seeded many different Churches. And also that Protestant movements were often against having a solidified hierarchy like that of the Catholic Church.

Because they all proclaim their own truths, in every Protestant church their truth is the only true faith. Catholics believe that their is only one truth which is shared between all Christians.

Difference between Catholic Rites and Protestant Denominations.
Catholics are unified under one Body of the Church, and acknowledge the Pope as being the head of their Church. If you ask a Roman Catholic about a Maronite Catholic we would say they are our Catholic brothers and sisters.
Protestants are not unified, but do cooperate with each other to defend certain common beliefs. If you ask a Lutheran about a Anglican they would say they are Christians, but they don't share our beliefs.

because the Bible can be interpreted in so many conflicting ways
and there is no one Protestant authority for interpreting the Bible and determining doctrine as in the Catholic Church

The Catholic Church has been in the world since Christ started it 2000 years ago. The protestant denominations started in the 1500s with 4 divisions. Since then they have divided into over 25,000 different sects. The old saying is that protestants multiply by division. Pax Christi

Because of the absurd doctrine of Sola Scriptura. All protestant denominations/branches adhere to this illogical and fallible doctrine. The sheer number of branches is a natural result of it.
