To anti-Christian atheists: are Protestantism and Catholicism equally bad?
It seems to me that most activist atheists are in countries where Protestantism is dominant, for instance here in England we have Dawkins and you in the US have Dennett. So, in places like the Med and Latin America, i.e. Catholic countries, there's less organized opposition to established theism.
It also seems that criticisms are generally level led at Protestantism rather than Catholicism, though clearly not exclusively - usually criticisms of Catholicism seem to concern reproductive and other sexual issues.
So, my question to you is: are the two equally bad in different ways, or is one worse than the other? Why?
I think you have an incomplete understanding of the facts. Despite the more vocal protestants, the majority of Christians in the USA (sorry, I don't know about England) are Catholic. I'd also suggest that "organized" atheism is not a function of the type of religion but is more likely due to other factors like education levels, social and cultural influences etc.
On the flip side, protestants tend to be more likely to be rabid creationists and thus are a larger threat to sound science education. However, it is not the religion or flavor that is the issue, it is how they effect the society that we share.
Pirate AM, that's incorrect - the catholic church is the largest single one in the USA, but put all the different kinds of protestant together and there's twice as many of them.
Catholic countries are better at keeping opposition quiet, owing to the controlling and absolutist nature of Catholicism, which probably goes some way to explaining that observation. Protestants are more fragmented and open to argument (apart from fundamentalists) which allows atheists more of a platform. However, they're both equally wrong.
