What is the difference between catholisism and protestantism?
I know that the differences go back to when Martin Luther made reforms such as no more indulgences but do Catholicism and protestantism have any different spiritual beliefs?
They were trying to get back to original Christianity but were a little off course. Check out the Orthodox church. Orthodox is the Greek word for Traditional.
Catholics believe more in worship ping saints and Mary, I'm not positive but I think Protestants dint worship those.
Catholics also dint believe in priests marrying or having women priests, whereas protestant pa tors can be female and married. Protestants dint have nuns either.
Well that's it exactly. Martin Luther began Protestantism with his 95 Theses. There really isn't much difference at all except that the different denominations have slightly different service structures for mass. All the Protestant denominations worship the same thing but in different ways, and all branch off of that crucial breach from the church by Martin Luther. So yeah. We all pretty much worship the exact same thing. I'm good with everybody :]
I would actually go read the 95 thesis Luther nailed to the Wittenburg door.....That would give you the best start. Luther was not trying to split from the church, but fix some of the problems.
However, central core theology surrounding the birth, life, death, resurrection, the blood atonement, repentance, salvation is actually the same. It becomes a bit muddled when either side wants to add something to that, and that is just flat out wrong to do. . Part of the Catholic church involves Mary way too much to the point she becomes co temptress, including praying to her as mediator, which has no biblical basis what so ever. (sorry to my Catholic friends who dint buy into the Mary teachings )
I contend if the distractions from core theology on salvation become paramount in ANY church (which happens alto) then the hearers do not understand Grace and faith alone. They then get caught up on works based salvation, making the cross of Christ of no effect. . .
authority. Eucharist. the 7 books Luther removed.
most believe the false rumors they hear, instead of reading and researching matters for themselves. we do not worship Mary, or the pope. as proof of this, read the poster above me. as a catholic I know it is only through God's grace that we are saved.
Basically the answer is no;
The protestants went against the mother church or Roman Catholic church in Martin Luther's 95 Thesis. He really did not want to break away from the church but rather reform or remake some of the church doctrines he did not agree with. Many of the people whom he spoke with happened to see things his way and followed him. He started a great movement that is still practiced today, know as the Lutheran church.
There are very few fundamental believes that are different than the original catholic church. Mainly Luther's point of view was that the selling of indulgences was a gross violation of the original intention of confession and penance, and that Christians were being falsely told that they could find absolution through the purchase of indulgences.
Simony or buying and selling church offices was also a great malpractice that needed to be reformed.
When this all came about the Lutherans, Calvinist, and Presbyterian denominations were began.
As far a fundamental doctoral changes the main ones are penance, purgatory, celibacy and smaller things that make little difference.
Hope this helped!
If you want to know what the differences between a Catholic and a Protestant are, there are many but your best bet to understand is to sit down, get ready to read a lot, and go to authoritative and unbiased sources.
The big difference between Catholicism and Protestantism are the five pillars, which paint a different picture of salvation, definitions of sin, freewill or predestination. These differences are many and vary from church to church.
Catholicism would have the claim to be the oldest, most faithful representation of Christianity based on comparison between the Church today and the Bible. Also comparison between the Church today and the teachings of Christians in days gone (a democracy of the dead if you will) such as those writings of The Church Fathers.
Catholics believe in seven sacraments.
Protestants believe in two.
Catholics believe that the Eucharist is changed in essence into The Body and Blood of Jesus Christ (see John 6, and The Last Supper)
Protestants believe this was only a symbol.
Catholics believe Sacred Tradition and Sacred Scripture are equal in value in sharing The Word of God. (The Bible says as much and there are many Christian teachings not in The Bible, such as The Trinity)
Protestants believe that only that which is "plainly" laid out in The Bible is too be believed.
Catholics believe that we are justified by "faith together with works". We must have faith, but we will also be judged according to our works.
Protestants believe in the man made doctrine "Sola Fidel" or "Faith Alone" which says that we only need to believe and we are saved.
Other points of contention include;
- Clerical celibacy
- Church authority and hierarchy.
- Biblical canon
- the priesthood (automatic or consecrated)
