You pose a question worth a proper answer.
Protestantism stems primarily from a human desire to shun ANY authority that is not convenient for that particular individual at any given time. It all started with the Eastern Orthodox Church situation in 1054. Then came Luther and the rest of his heretic brethren who were bound by history to do what they did, and that was their choice, one error leading into another, until there was utter chaos that exists to this very day. Yet the Catholic Church remains, despite any attempts of men to create an "improved" version of it, if that were possible. The sin of rebellion is as of witchcraft.
In all truth,to reject the Catholic Church is to reject Christ Himself. No one can legitimately refute this truth and there is not enough ink and paper in the universe to convince the Faithful of Christ otherwise, which makes for a difficult time in the Roman Catholic evangelistic process and apologetics, respectively. Either one knows the Truth or one does not. To claim otherwise that the Catholic Church is the True Church of Jesus Christ, one would either be a heretic or have lost their reason. One may be excused from sin due to madness, but heresy is another whole situation.
Christ Himself foretold the situation, so it was no surprise to the Church that it was bound to happen (to a full scale, not just some minor heresies here and there). Protestantism exists because it is easier to make up your own rules, and change them often as modernism and liberalism dictate (thus justifying sin, if that is possible) than it is to follow those established by Christ Himself.
