The book attacks the basis of much of the entire Christian faith. I think the Catholics are just being more outspoken about it as a group.
PS. To indigo95207, Like the church itself didn't disgrace Mary Magdeline for centuries by saying she was a prostitute? The Catholics didn't recant THAT info until the 1970's. And the theories used in the book aren't so parenthetical, they're pretty straightforward.
Because the book and movie are exposing how corrupt they were in manipulating history in order to keep their power and control over their followers. If you ask me, it's about time something really rattled their gilded cage!!
Because the movie is full of blatant lies and parenthetical theories. It completely makes a mockery of the bible. , And port ray's Jesus as just another mortal being ,and makes him carnal . It also disgraces Mary Madeline and many of the teachings in the Bible. It is simply , NOT accurate and is just another fantasy film\ which many people will take as truth, and they will be Miss-led about the truth.
The so called "The DA Vince code" by Dan Brown, is a controversial text contradicting many beliefs of the catholic church, to state some, it talks about the love life of Jesus, moreover it states that he was married to Mary Magdalene and they had a daughter. The book believes that in "The last supper" by Leonardo Da Vince, the person sitting right to Jesus was Mary Magdalene. It also unravels many truths about Mary Magdalene. It states that the blood line of Jesus still survives.however there is no substantial proof for any of these, the author just relies on beliefs and stories. The film is directed by Steven Spielberg, tom hanks stars in it.
the book tells about ( among others):
1.the supposed marriage of Jesus with Mary Magdalene--- brown says "Jesus must have wed because Jewish decorum would "virtually forbid" an unmarried man. His spouse was Mary Magdalene and their daughter inaugurated a royal bloodline in France."
2.the doubtful divinity of Jesus:
Christians viewed Jesus as a mere mortal until A.D. 325 when the Emperor Constantine "turned Jesus into a deity" by getting the Council of Nicaea to endorse divine status by "a relatively close vote."
3.conservative group Opus Dei is portrayed as a villa nous group
4. a lot more
5. AND, THE MAIN PROBLEM IS "Da Vinci" is billed as more than mere fiction.
The author's opening page begins with the word "FACT" and asserts that all descriptions of documents are "accurate"
I am a roman catholic living in the ONLY Catholic country in southeast Asia. I have read this entertaining book. I say it IS entertaining. Whether a mere book will change a Catholic's faith depends on the person reading it.
I do know that the Church leaders are corruptible. Where there's a man, there is always the possibility of corruption.
because they are a bunch of whiners who don't understand the point behind a FICTIONAL story!! I'd be more concerned about all the child molesters if I were them!
The movie which is based on the book not only misrepresents the Church as a murderous institution but it also implies that Christian faith is utterly false.
Brown writes about this mysterious and holy reality as if it were the Kiwanis Club with a somewhat longer and much nastier pedigree. Given how Catholics understand the Church, it was inevitable that his painfully false portrayal - despite its being fiction - would to be taken personally, for in a very profound way, it is personal.
By way of analogy, imagine what your reaction would be if a novelist were to tell you, "I am going to write a novel about your family, in which you will be portrayed as a band of criminals and perverts. I am going to use your real name and the names of your parents and grandparents. All the information regarding your family - a fair bit of which will, in fact, be true - will be presented as if it were the product of careful historical research. But - not to worry - it's only a novel, and after wards I'll give you a chance to respond to the falsehoods in my book."
Of course, our imaginary author has every right to publish his novel. The question to be raised here is another: would anyone with a sense of decency or responsibility write such a novel and then - when the novel is an international success that is taken far too seriously by many readers - make a movie of it? I find it hard to believe that this is the kind of thing that Sony and Dan Brown are eager to be seen doing.
