Catholic takes less time to say. They are the same thing.

--Oops, I guess I am wrong. There are so such think as "Eastern Catholic" churches, but they are nowhere as popular as the Roman Catholic faith. Also, the Roman Catholic Church is the only one that can trace its roots to Jesus, through Peter. So...

WE ARE THE BEST!!

There once was a church called The Catholic Church.
Eventually, the bishop of Rome pronounced himself the head of the church.
Those Catholics in what we call 'Eastern Europe' said 'no way!'
They split to become Orthodox Catholics.
Those in the west became known as Roman Catholics.

Katholoikos - KATH = "according to" HOLOS or HOLON = "the whole'. The Creeds know of only "One, Holy Catholic and Apostolic Church" - because it is whole. The divisions: "Roman", "Eastern", Anglican, Byzantine are man-made and offensive to God.

Catholic means "according to the whole". "Roman" Catholic refers to one sect under the Bishop of Rome.

In common parlance the term most often refers to the members, beliefs, and practices of the Catholic Church (Roman Catholic Church) that is in full communion with the Pope (Bishop of Rome). It comprises the Latin Rite and twenty-two Eastern Catholic Churches. The Eastern Catholic particular Churches include the Ukrainian, Greek, Greek Melkite, Maronite, Ruthenian Byzantine, Coptic Catholic, Syro-Malabar, Syro-Malankara, Chaldean, and Ethiopic Rites.

The Catholic Church is a worldwide organization made up of one Western or Latin and 22 Eastern Catholic particular Churches, all of which have the Holy See of Rome as their highest authority on earth. It is divided into jurisdictional areas, usually on a territorial basis. The standard territorial unit is called a diocese in the Latin Church and an peachy in the Eastern Churches, each of which is headed by a bishop. At the end of 2005, the total number of all these jurisdictional areas (or "Sees") was 2,770
