How did Roman Catholic Pilgrimages Start?

How did the pilgrimages of Roman Catholics begin? Why do they travel to the Vatican city?

Mainly,the Pope,culture,ethnicity,religion,food.Oh,yeah.To get away from these whacked out Christians!

A pilgrimage is a source of grace and a means of growing in faith. It is a way of repenting and preparing interiorLyor a change of heart. Scripture shows the special significance of setting out to go to sacred places. For example, Israelites would go on pilgrimage to the city where the Ark of the Covenant was kept, or to visit the shrine at Bethel (Jg 20:18). Jesus went with Mary and Joseph as a pilgrim to Jerusalem, in fulfilling the Law (Lk 2:41).

Travelling to any holy place can count as a pilgrimage, it does not have to be the Vatican. Lots of people go to the Vatican and it is not done as a pilgrimage, but it can be.

The ancient Jews like Jesus and his family traveled in pilgrimage to Jerusalem for every Passover. Catholic pilgrimages are just a reflection of those of Jesus and our Jewish forefathers.

A pilgrimage is traditionally a journey to a holy place, for example, the Holy Land, Rome and Lourdes. The journey is just as important than the destination but having a destination is rather important.

A pilgrimage can enhance ones spirituality through penance and prayer. A pilgrimage evokes our earthly journey toward heaven and is traditionally a special occasion for renewal in prayer.
