The Orthodox Church and the Roman Catholic church were the same Church -- spread over the
Middle East, the Mediterranean area, and Europe -- for the first 1000 years of Christianity. They are
the church that Jesus gave us, based on Jesus's statement to Peter recorded by the Apostle Matthew:
"And I say also unto thee, That thou art Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church; and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it." Mat 16:18

Jesus created his church, and its members are with us today in the Orthodox and Roman Catholic Churches.
