Venezuela existed in prehistoric times long before Christopher Columbus discovered it on August 1, 1498. He named it Isla DE Garcia. It wasn't named Venezuela until a year later by another expedition led by Alfonso DE Ojeda came back to it a year later. The discoverers were all Catholic so the land was colonized by Catholics since then, but the oil was there even before that.
The fossil fuel products in the area may have developed from either fossilized animal and plant products over eons of years or from naturally occurring carbon deposits in the area.
