I understand its a religious thing to kills animals...to me its just cruel. If they want to sacrifice blood, why don't they just cut themselves slightly?
My neighbors do Santeria, I cry when I hear the animals go through all that pain and agony when they're being killed :'(
Actually, I am a vegetarian
I don't eat meat, I actually started this a while ago because of the way I feel towards animals and our environment...Emilie...this isn't supposed to be funny.
Mary, I don't understand your response. My neighbors kill all types of animals from goats to pigs to chickens, its horrid
I don't think that killing an animal if you won't eat it is right...so again its not funny, I think its past your bedtime.
Rayven, please explain. I am genuinely interested in why they would they use animal blood instead of their own...
I'm not against any religion, I am just an animal/nature/environment person...it hurts me to see all this global warming news, animals being neglected, and now animals being killed for whatever benefits sacrificing them will give these people...
I seriously want to know why THEIR blood has to be sacrificed? YEARS ago, didn't people sacrifice their own blood in this type of religion?
This would be a much better question for the Religious section. I practice my own beliefs and I do not begrudge people the right to practice theirs. However, they could be in trouble for animal abuse depending on what they're doing.
Personally no, I would never sacrifice an animal. It's a difficult issue because that's a religion that some people really believe in (personally I can't understand it). It doesn't seem right that you have to hear the animals suffering though.
"In 1993, the issue of animal sacrifice was taken to the United States Supreme Court in the case of Church of Lukumi Babalu Aye v. City of Hialeah. The Supreme Court ruled that animal cruelty laws targeted specifically at Yoruba were unconstitutional;[8] the Yoruba practice of animal sacrifice has seen no significant legal challenges since then."
Apparently making it illegal would be unconstitutional in the Supreme Court's opinion so it's doubtful it will ever be made illegal to practice. Assuming you live in the United States that is. I don't know much about the laws of other countries.
@Emilie: Lol I guess it is kind of hypocritical that I love eating meat but hate the idea of killing an animal. And hey, my religion used to practice animal sacrifice too (Christianity =P).
ADD: It's true that while discriminating against the religion specifically is unconstitutional, there are laws that prohibit sacrificing certain animals. Depending on what animals they are killing (and how they are killing them), it could be against the law. I believe it's illegal most places in the US to sacrifice cats and dogs. Killing animals like goats is legal some places as long as it's done humanly.
Either way, you could call the authorities and have it checked out. If they aren't doing anything illegal then they won't have anything to hide. I don't think the police would look down on you for being concerned about hearing the sounds dying animals coming from your neighbor's house.
I don't believe in it personally, but one of the most important things in American (and other enlightened countries) is freedom of religion. As I understand it, practitioners of Santeria kill the sacrificed animals as humanely as possible and later eat the meat. How is that different from what goes on at a butcher shop? You may not like to think about where your steak comes from, but it is happening anyway. Don't pretend you are better just because your meat comes in a package and you don't have to witness its death.
Do you eat meat? If you do you're just being a complete hypocrite.
LOL
Add: ah aha I'm Christian too, and I hate that part BUT so did my pastor when I used to go to youth.. I'm a veggie head LOL.
Add: I said LOL out of habit, and sorry but, who the hell are you to tell me to go to bed? I think it's past YOUR bedtime, it's the Internet and I can LOL as much as I like.
I don't think it should be illegal. My religion we do things people don't agree with, like I've been taking communion since I was 8, (it is traditionally wine, and we are a traditional church.) Slaughter houses are much worse.
I don't believe in animals being killed for no reason, but animals do have to die to be eaten.
Well, you need to really call the authorities next time you hear an animal being murdered, it is not okay to murder any one or any animal for any religion,
I do not interfere with any ones belief's until it involves murder or torture....
This is wrong of them, let them practice on a rubber chicken instead.
They and will be arrested for this practice, it is against the law in the US to do this.........
I am very sorry you are having to listen to this, but you should not, do something about it please, your name will never be told to them, you can also call your local Prosecuting Attorneys office and they will stop this asap, and will bring charges against them.
"They and will be arrested for this practice, it is against the law in the US to do this" No Its not Iggy. Santaria and more than a few of the other African religions practice animal sacrifice in the us and it is PERFECTLY LEGAL as long as it is done in a humane manner and they are using LIVESTOCK animals. Cats and dogs would get them in trouble but guess what, chickens? Goats? Humane slaughtered and then consumed? Not a dang thing is going to happen. And personally any cops that would bother with this, any DA that would waste time on this when there are real monsters out there is wasting the taxpayers time and money.
No I don't practice Santeria but I know people who do and no I don't think it should outlawed.
"If they want to sacrifice blood, why don't they just cut themselves slightly?" I am really not going to try and take the time to explain the difference between human blood sacrifice and animal blood sacrifice in these sorts of religions. It'll take to long and I doubt you will really care.
"My neighbors kill all types of animals from goats to pigs to chickens, its horrid" The kill less animals than the slaughter houses and the animals are far better taken care of and are more respected both in life and DEATH than their cousins are when it comes to them landing on our plates.
"I cry when I hear the animals go through all that pain and agony when they're being killed :'(" The noise is BEFORE any killing is done. And you know how its done? A quick slash to the throat. The animal is dead within seconds and felt little to no pain. Santeria will not allow the animal to suffer. Allowing the animal to suffer negates the ritual itself and is an affront to the Orisha.
And while on the subject on animal sacrifice - Up until a point Christianity was right along side other religions for animal sacrifice. HELL they sacrificed an animal for any and every little thing from the birth of a child to the ending of a woman's period.
Not every part of Santeria calls for animal sacrifice anyways. Some rituals do. So before all you try and stand in judgment I suggest you actually pick up some books and talk to a few long time practitioners and educate yourself.
Freedom of religion doesn't just mean religions you are personally comfortable with
