You need a godparent as a guide. Santeria is very complicated and a community religion.
The book that introduced me to the religion is "Alter of My Soul" by Marta Moreno Vega. She also wrote a book called, "When the Saints Dance Mambo" which talks about growing up in Spanish Harlem.
Books by Migene Gonz?lez-Wippler are discredited by practitioners. She is not a practitioner or knows the rituals.
Animal sacrifice is a small part of Santeria. It is done during celebrations, which the animal is used to feed the community (just as meat out of the supermarket) or during extreme need. Then only specialized practitioners can do it.
Santeria isn't a mysterious religion, it's a way of life. It's a connection to your ancestors and Santos to find peace within yourself.
***You may want to join a group for the topics, "Santeria, Orishas, Lucumi, or Lukumi."
OrishaCentral@yahoogroups.com is one.
You could go to a botanic in your community. But join a group to ask people what House is respectable in your community.
