Some enslaved people in the Western Hemisphere got funky with Catholicism and their spiritual practices from before they were captured, and add a period of suffering and its stresses, and it's a big old mess as practiced by their descendants.

I dunno a lot about it, but I have visited a Santeria shop before. From what I can tell, there's an incense and candle for just about every possible application.

Its a religion of west African and Carribbean origin. It is often linked with Vodoun (Voodoo) and cited as evil but Vodoun isn't all about voodoo dolls and things, its not evil like you think. I don't know a huge deal about it but I believe its a mixture of belief which combines the religion the slaves were when they came over, with Catholicism and native American traditions. I believe they have multiple gods who they term "Orisha's". It sounds very interesting, I do need to read up on it more.

a religion that combines the African Yoruba religion with Roman Catholicism.....recognizes a supreme God as well as other spirits. it was originally developed in Cuba by West African slaves, it is now practiced in the Caribbean and the United States.

I don't know much., but what i understand is it originated in parts of Brazil & Cuba around ( mainly the Caribbean countries) .
-The Yoruban natives who were taken [enslaved] from their home countries (Africa.. or West Africa I believe) were taken to these parts of the Caribbean as slaves'.
-Original they believed in Orisha..(part of the Yoruba faith) but once in the Caribbean countries they were baptized to be Roman Catholic. And so merged the 2 faiths [religions] into one., so that they could worship their Orisha via the Catholic saints. - which is why it is now known as 'Santeria'
